1. I yearn for the swaying branch of the supple palm tree,
Swaying gently, not violently or unjustly.

2. Its lovers do not awaken from their dwellings
Due to a moment of indifference, like an unexpected fate.

3. Its wood is from Persia and its carpenter
Is from Oman, and its foliage is from Babylon.

4. O heart that loves it and pupil of its eyes,
Who could love a killer except the one killed?

5. Did it approach with a glance or with a sharp white sword,
Or with a slender figure or with a tanned body ready to wither?

6. It meets you with spears from its slim waist,
And assaults with arrows from its eyelashes.

7. Like the moon it moves among the stars’ necklaces,
And the darkness of its temples and clouds of its tresses.

8. My tears did not flow after their long stillness
Except for that fluttering cheek.

9. I love the one I love to the point of hating
His estrangement, until I resent even the imagination that unites us.

10. Falsehood arose in my ribs and tears,
Perplexed between embers and springs.

11. In me is a gazelle in the garb of beauty that
Did not spend the night heedless of the injustice of the lover.

12. Thirsty in my heart I remained silently asking about him
The question of the aloof camel to the pouring rain.

13. He whose waist is weighted down by eyes, so his gait
Is the gait of the drunk camel.

14. I embraced him yet wondrously emaciated,
Seeking remedy from the feeble healer.

15. The dawn under the darkness is as though
The color of gray hair amid the pure black dye.

16. And lightning moves through the clouds resembling
A promise before the arrival of virtuous rain.

17. A charitable man to whom I complain of my deficiencies,
The complaint of the locust to the pouring cloud.

18. And I spent the night longing for the fulfillment of his promises,
The longing of darkness for the disappearing crescent moon.

19. The drizzle of his leniency keeps me awake,
And the rising of dawn foretells abundant rain.

20. For dreams are not bachelor, and fortune
Is not waning, and opinion is not useless.

21. It ascends though years where stars are lamps,
And it acts generously in the mean, stingy times.

22. And if the ostrich spread its wings on the pasture,
It crafted necklaces on the neck of the idle wild cow.

23. Writings which regiments are forced to obey
And messages like the persistent beseecher.

24. It reaps the fruits of miracles, and at times
Reaps the liver of the treacherous enemy.

25. Our ears wore its necklace of love,
And so it adorns everything monumental.

26. A wonderful line attained exquisite meaning
Like water accompanied by the light of torches.

27. Intellects were enchanted by meeting it,
The enchantment of the longing for the fleeting mixture.

28. Like a lion, it defeats every rival raising a flag
Seeking battle with a worker from the workers.

29. It turns calamities with its like and walks in
The hottest of battles with every brave lion.

30. Were it not for him, the group would not be united
And the homes of nobles would not be shelters.

31. O Abu Ali, an invitation from Kamil
While time is war for the perfect and generous.

32. I have no means to the King of Kings
Except you, and that is the best of my means.

33. From his generosity like rain quenching thirst
Without troughs or bowls.

34. His swords meet enemies with terrifying
Lightning, and his steeds with quakes.

35. A group who strove to the heat of battle
With clouds created by hands.

36. The summits are immersed in oceans of their palms,
Circling wonders for an extractor obtaining water.

37. The horsemen of an epic, saving the thirsty,
Moons of darkness, lions of regiments.

38. The night of gloom did not darken before they appeared
The blossoms of stars over the withered pasture.

39. They clashed like shining planets,
With stars and contended with rivers.

40. Rather like suns when they appeared in the tumult
The stars became shades with wings disappearing.

41. Of all the past, the limit formidable of terror
And determination hoped for leniency slippery.

42. Like the swift they confound between latecomers
And aimed arrows and between early arrivals.

43. Corrector of green blades and dwellings,
So when they become tumultuous they darken prisons.

44. So untie even with despair the bond of my expression
For despair frees the tongue of the hopeful.

45. And praise is revived by promises truly
And killed by the distance of prolonged expectancy.

46. Glory became difficult and I never praised a blamer
So any fault in it or cried for a miser.

47. The askers have attained success with a doer
Bountiful and I sufficed with a sayer.

48. I gathered from the flood of kindness abundant
And I wandered from the ways of the sublime seeking.

49. So repel with your might the fang of an attacking enemy
And open for your kindness the door of dormant fortune.

50. For you have long fulfilled the purpose of my poems
And seized with benevolence the intellect of my tribes.

51. Arabic I composed during wakefulness
As if it was composed with the lightning of a reasonable man.

52. Honor with it a city Arab and a nomad Arab,
It softened and observed like the separating sword.

53. It stirred nightingales of every hearing with pleasure,
As if it were the warbling of nightingales in perfume.

54. It contained gravity and eloquence none attained
And attains the understanding of the ignorant.

55. Do not heed the verse of people whose origin
Is my verse, for the sea is the origin of the coast.

56. They sought but missed what I am saying,
Like a star that distances from the hand of the ambitious.

57. When the insects sought to rise to an eminence,
My logic from me poured on them with arguers.

58. They are docile rhymes, and if I hide
Injury, they are my tribes and clans.

59. I have become clouds of expression contending
With their number, as if I were among the early arrivals.
