1. From the lofty companion with long strides
The envious glance with tearful, downcast eyes

2. Who can blame the generosity of the son of Ali
None can meet with aught but kindness in response

3. His eloquence returned prose to the scribes
As model for the tongues of eloquent writers

4. While they come with rinds, his is the pith of books
His eloquence the essence of quintessence

5. His nature draws wrath should his manner displease
Yet calms ire with the whip’s lashes of punishment

6. And whene’er he takes residence, his bounty tames
Smoothing over like the clouds’ drifting shower

7. Monarchs stand before him after long aloofness
Like gatekeepers after the lifting of the veil

8. Describing the Chosen strains the most verbose
As their pleonasm piles up pleonasm

9. O Chosen of the Faith, by whom God swiftly reckons
You tamed the far lands with your claws, O wolf

10. So every cur of underbite now has no fangs
Naught but gums in its toothless maw

11. You sweetened the land of disagreeable neighbors
Till its redolence wafted from district to district

12. You raised the rain cloud high over it
And set up justice’s scale and weight

13. It now has throngs of people and fresh water
Ever renewed in bounteous outpouring

14. It is now the mosque for the five ritual prayers
The folk behind the prayer-niche imam

15. All beseeching God within it to answer you
With response to the answered supplicant

16. Because of you the gate of deliverance gleams
Upon the world brighter than Paradise’s gate

17. Once gloomy, you made it gleam anew
Dispelling darkness with your strength

18. And praise of your fair name will endure
Lasting through ages with enduring survival

19. That, praise without rhyme or prosody
From the utterance of the praiser and orator

20. It was your resolve that built the mosque, O resolute one
Your purpose hits the mark of what is right

21. It's a fortress for Muslims, an impregnable redoubt
While you are the lion of the thicket

22. Were the Two-Horned to see it, he would see
A wondrous marvel making wonder cease

23. And would view it as a Ya’juj Ma’juj barrier
The frustrating, astounding, dazzling veil

24. In our state, your justice has restored
To decrepitude, the raven hair of youth

25. It transcends the lofty heights, and blood congealing
Praises which laud you in the wine glass’s dregs

26. And celebrates each feast joyously gathered
Uniting lover and beloved as one
