1. Every beauty is a slave of the Merciful
But his heart is not merciful
١. كُلُّ مَليحٍ عَبدُ عَبدِ الرَحيم
لَكِنَّهُ ما قَلبُهُ بِالرَحيم
2. How strange of me and of him, but what
Is stranger than a lion startled by a glance of an antelope
٢. واعَجَباً مِنّي وَمِنهُ وَما
أَعجَبَ لَيثاً صادَهُ لَحظُ ريم
3. How can I free myself of my love for him
When he clung to me like a creditor
٣. كَيفَ خَلاصي مِن غَرامي بِهِ
وَهوَ الَّذي لا زَمَني كَالغَريم
4. It is I whom the sickness of his eyelids
And his slender waist made my body frail
٤. أَنا الَّذي مِن سُقمِ أَجفانِهِ
وَخَصرِهِ الناحِلِ جِسمي سَقيم
5. He scatters pearls when he speaks to me
From his mouth, and his mouth is a well-arranged pearl
٥. يَنثُرُ إِن حَدَّثَني لُؤلُؤاً
مِن ثَغرِهِ وَالثَغرُ دُرٌّ نَظيم
6. He reveals the sun on the branch in
The delicate bend of the waist under a plump belly
٦. وَيُطلِعُ الشَمسَ عَلى الغُصنِ في
حِقفِ النَقا مِن تَحتِ خَصرٍ هَضيم
7. His face and hair are the rising sun
Appearing from under the darkness of night
٧. وَوَجهُهُ وَالشَعرُ شَمسُ الضُحى
طالِعَةً مِن تَحتِ لَيلٍ بَهيم
8. He remains generous when united, and when
Aloof and turning away from me, noble
٨. مازالَ بِالوَصلِ بِخيلاً وَبِال
صُدودِ وَالإِعراضِ عَنّي كَريم
9. He is the one whose love intoxicated me
And nothing remains for me except regret as a boon companion
٩. وَهوَ الَّذي أَسكَرَني حُبُّهُ
وَلَيسَ إِلّا نَدَمي لي نَديم
10. Do not blame Jacob for his love
Of Joseph, for blaming is a grave sin
١٠. لا تَعذِلوا يَعقوبَ في حُبِّهِ
يوسُفَ إِنَّ العَذلَ إِثمٌ عَظيم
11. I see the one blaming me in passion
To be on a path that is not straight
١١. إِنّي أَرى العاذِلَ لي في الهَوى
عَلى صِراطٍ لَيسَ بِالمُستَقيم
