نَوماً فَلَستَ بِمَتروكٍ وَلا هَمَلِ

12. Woe to every drowning man who finds faults in others
While he himself is full of faults.

١٢. واهاً لِمُستَيقِظٍ مِن نَومِ غَفلَتِهِ
لِفَهمِ آدابِ أَهلِ الأَعصُرِ الأُوَلِ

15. I will strive to refute the intense blame,
And silence the vile after my departure.

١٥. قالوا اِمتَدِح عُظَماءَ الناسِ قُلتُ لَهُم
خوفُ الزَنابيرِ يَثنيني عَنِ العَسَلِ

16. Think not the light of the sun is weakened
By whatever clouds or dust that fills the air.

١٦. وَالأُسدُ تَهرُبُ مِن قَرصِ الذُّبابِ وَما
أَغرى خِساسَ الوَرى بِالسادَةِ النُّبُلِ

17. I do not blame my envious one for his deception against me,
Falsely, while I have neither done nor said.

١٧. سَوءاتُهُم هَزَمَت مَجدي وَلا عَجَبٌ
عَمرٌو بِسَوءَتِهِ في الحَربِ رَدَّ عَلي

18. Lower yourself, for the full moon in the sky,
When barking dogs clamor at it, is not diminished.

١٨. إِن ضِقتَ ذَرعاً بِأَقوامٍ سَواسِيَةٍ
فَما الكَريمُ بِأَن يُؤذى بِمُحتَمِلِ

19. They are carriers of the burden of disgrace,
And they are stronger than camels in carrying its load.

١٩. أَمسى قَرارَةُ سَيلِ الخُرءِ يَعبَثُ بي
فَهوَ السُّها إِذ يُعيدُ الشَمسَ في الحَمَلِ

20. Their only armor is insulting in every dreadful situation,
Both when it is folded up and when it is spread out.

٢٠. هَذا مِنَ الدَّهرِ مَشهورٌ وَما بَرِحَت
أَهلُ المَعالي ذُرابى أَلسُنِ السفلِ

21. The people of wildness, when an evil wind blows,
People avoid it, whether near or distant.

٢١. بَينَ الصِّحاحِ وَبَينَ العورِ لا سَلِموا
بَونٌ وَما حَوَرُ العَينَينِ كَالكَحَلِ

22. If they are pleased they roar, and if angry they all
Bare their fangs like an enraged lion.

٢٢. تَبّاً لِكُلِّ غَريقٍ في مَعايِبِهِ
يَعيبُ خَلَّةَ مَن ما فيهِ مِن خَلَلِ

23. They are accustomed to victory; their affliction is praiseworthy;
And the horses stumble over the slain and wounded.

٢٣. وَلَيسَ ذَنبي سِوى طولِ الثَّواءِ وَمَن
طالَ الثَّواءُ عَلَيهِ رِيعَ بِالمَلَلِ

24. The people of courage, when a north wind blows,
People barter it from near and far.

٢٤. وَالعَجزُ أَوجَبَ لي ذُلَّ الخُمولِ وَلَو
أَنّي تَنَقَّلتُ كانَ العِزُّ في النُّقَلِ

25. If the days treat me well, and if they are harsh, all of them
Are like an enraged lion baring its fangs.

٢٥. لأَنزَعَن في قِسِيِّ الذَّمِّ مُجتَهِداً
فَأُصمِيَنَّ لِئاماً بَعدَ مُرتَحَلي

26. They disparage me saying I am from Baniyas, but how much
A pleasant living have I enjoyed in its shady shadows!

٢٦. لا تَحسِبَن أَنَّ نورَ الشَّمسِ يُوهِنُهُ
ما أُلبِسَ الجوُّ مِن غَيم وَمِن طَفَلِ

27. And its people are like pure gold coins without
Any cheating, confusion, or fraud among them.

٢٧. وَما ألومُ حَسودي في تَقَوُّلِهِ
زوراً عَلَيَّ وَلَم أَفعَل وَلَم أَقُلِ

28. Pearls come from oyster shells, roses grow amid
Thorns, and the narcissus with dew comes from an onion bulb.

٢٨. خَفِّض عَلَيكَ فَما بَدرُ السَماءِ إِذا
ما الكَلبُ أَوسَعَهُ نَبحاً بِمُحتَفِلِ

29. O Lord of a pure white complexion from which black pupils shine,
And pink cheeks within which red lips smile like chrysolite beads.

٢٩. هُمُ زَوامِلُ ثِقلِ العارِ مُعنقةً
وَهُم عَلى حَملِهِ أَقوى مِنَ الإِبِلِ

30. When she turns to show us her cheeks, milk oozes forth
And roses blush with shy modesty.

٣٠. حِداؤُها شَتمُهُم في كُلِّ موحِشَةٍ
تُطوى وَتُنشَرُ فيها ألعَنُ السُبُلِ

31. Red are her pillows, sleepless are her eyelids,
Intoxicating is her glance like that of a reveler.

٣١. ما يَقدرونَ عَلى إِخفائِهِم حَسَبي
وَذاكَ أَسيرُ بَينَ الناسِ مِن مَثَلِ

32. She casts arrows that blind, though her admirers
See clearly, for she is a better archer than the clan of Thu'al.

٣٢. وَلَو دَعَوتُ لَلَبَّتني ضراغمة
تَدأى إِلى جاحِمٍ بِالحَربِ مُشتَعِلِ

33. I have repelled with the chastity of the chaste without
Weakness, fear, or alarm.

٣٣. كُلٌّ مِنَ القَومِ إِن يَركَب إِلى رَهَجٍ
يَوماً تَرَجَّلَ رَأسُ الفارِسِ البَطَلِ

34. How many lines that delight the listeners -
Flawless in meaning without any error.

٣٤. قَومٌ إِذا حَمَلوا في الرَّوعِ خِلتَهُمُ ال
أَتِيَّ مُنحَدِراً مِن ذِروَةِ الجَبَلِ

35. I have composed them like radiant pearls
That adorn their reciter and relieve his boredom.

٣٥. معوَّدوا النَّصر مَحمودٌ بلاؤُهُمُ
وَالخَيلُ تَعثُرُ بِالأَشلاءِ وَالقُلَلِ

36. If God has advanced some people and delayed me,
The sun at its zenith is eclipsed from Saturn.

٣٦. أَهلُ الجِفانِ إِذا هَبَّت شَآمِيَةٌ
يَمتارُها الناسُ مِن حافٍ وَمُنتَعِلِ

37. Where can my soul find peace from their crowds?
Upon the course of death my soul is more at rest.

٣٧. إِن أَرضَ يَرضَوا وَإِن أَسخَط فَكُلُّهُم
كَاللَيثِ يَكشِرُ عَن أَنيابِهِ العُصُلِ

38. I have left the sea of poetry for people, so let them derive
What they wish of praise from me.

٣٨. إِن عابَني أَنَّني مِن بانياسَ فَكَم
عَيشٍ نَعِمتُ بِهِ في ظِلِّها الخَضَلِ

39. And deposit from my mouth into your hearing
Glistening pearls of poetry, not borrowed.

٣٩. وَأَهلُها كَالدَّنانيرِ الصِحاحِ بِلا
غِشٍّ وَلا بَهرَجٍ فيهِم وَلا زَغَلِ

40. Whether you are preparing or improvising,
The best preparation is what comes extemporaneously.

٤٠. فَالدُرُّ مِن صَدَفٍ وَالوَردُ يَطلُعُ بَي
نَ الشَوكِ وَالنَرجِسُ الرَيّانُ مِن بَصَلِ

41. I have shunned it disdainfully, wanting nothing to do with it,
For I have neither she-camel nor camel in it.

٤١. يا رُبَّ بيضٍ سَلَلن البيضَ مِن حَدَقٍ
سودٍ وَمِسنَ بِأعطافِ القَنا الذُّبُلِ

42. How can I seek the hands I kiss
When my shoes are more worthy of kissing?

٤٢. هيفُ الخُصورِ نَقِيّاتُ الثُغورِ أَثي
ثاتُ الشُعورِ هَجَرنَ الكُحل لِلكَحَلِ

43. If a hand does not enrich the one who praises,
Along with wealth, God has paralyzed it.

٤٣. مِن كُلِّ مُرتَجَّةِ الأَردافِ إِن نَهَضتَ
شَكَت مَعاطِفُها جَوراً مِنَ الكَفَلِ

44. Ever since I have known this world,
I have not been seen grazing in the pasture of baseness.

٤٤. مِثلُ الشُموسِ اِنسَرى عَنها الغَمامُ إِذا
غازَلنَنا مِن وَراءِ السِّجفِ وَالكَلِلِ

45. High ideals, if fate treats me harshly,
I will solace myself with music and poetry.

٤٥. لَو كانَ حُسنُ زَليخاً حُسنهُنَّ وَقَد
خَلَت بِيوسُفَ قدَّ الثَوبُ مِن قُبُلِ

46. Do not covet what you cannot attain of this
World, for livelihood cannot be secured through ruses.

٤٦. وَشادِنٍ مِثل بَدرِ التمِّ يَبسِمُ عَن
ثَغرٍ كَلُؤلُؤِ سِمطٍ واضِحٍ رَتلِ

47. God has decreed a provision for me which I will attain -
It is unavoidable, just like my death.

٤٧. مَتى تَثَنّى وَأَبدى وَجنَتَيهِ لَنا
فَالبانُ مُنخَزِلٌ وَالوَردُ في خَجَلِ

48. Bounty and wealth are two beloved things when combined,
But does dawn ever coincide with the wolf?

٤٨. حُمرٌ مَراشِفُهُ نَشوى مَعاطِفُهُ
مُعَربِدٌ لَحظُهُ كَالشارِبِ الثَّمِلِ

49. Secrecy of heart is the abode where a prudent man’s secret dwells;
The foolish man has no sound opinion or counsel.

٤٩. يَرمي فَيُصمي وَلا تَنمي لَواحِظُهُ
قُلوبَنا فَهيَ أَرمى مِن بَني ثُعَلِ

50. Beware of associating with those who are not kindred spirits,
For wax melts only from contact with flame.

٥٠. رَدَدتُ عَنهُم يَدي رَدَّ العَفافِ بِلا
ضَعفٍ عَراني وَلا خَوفٍ وَلا وَجَلِ

51. His dwelling was on the peaks of mountains,
But he was annoyed by honey and honeycomb after.

٥١. وَكَم قَوافٍ تَروقُ السامِعينَ مَعا
نيها بِلا خَطَأ فيها وَلا خَطَلِ

52. Solitude, when one is withdrawn
From false friends, is most intimate - so shun them and do not decay.

٥٢. نَظَمتُها كَعُقودِ الدُرِّ ناصِعَةً
تُحِلُّ مُنشِدَها مِن رِبقَةِ العَطَلِ

53. None in your time can you call a true friend
Except one who has some self-interest.

٥٣. إِن قَدَّمَ اللَهُ أَقواماً وَأَخَّرَني
فَالشَمسُ مُنحَطَّةٌ في الأَوجِ عَن زُحَلِ

54. O group who have rejected the honorable with rejection,
The beauty of their deeds in word and action has made me wonder!

٥٤. وَأَينَ راحَةُ روحي مِن زحامِهِمُ
عَلى الرَّكِيِّ البَكِيِّ المَوتُ أَروَحُ لي

55. It is as if in their self-righteousness they are Hanbalites
Who see all people of ethics as apostates.

٥٥. تَرَكتُ لِلناسِ بَحرَ الشِّعرِ فَليَرِدوا
وَقَد قَنَعتُ مِنَ الأَمواهِ بِالوَشَلِ

56. If the Commander of the Faithful saw them, he would not have said:
Incline to this prosody, O Ibn al-Aswad ad-Du'ali!

٥٦. وَالبَحرُ فيهِ لَآلٍ كَالسَماءِ بِها ال
نُجومُ مَن رامَها أَعيا وَلَم يَصِلِ

57. Whoever among them is praised at night says foolishly:
Turn away! For my brain is not to be influenced!

٥٧. أَنِفتُ مِن طَمَعٍ مُدنٍ إِلى طَبعٍ
وَعِفتُ لَبسَةَ ذُلِّ الحَرفِ وَالأَمَلِ

58. In truth he said: Does it find him influenced
By praise, while he is intensely stingy?

٥٨. إِنَّ القَناعَةَ لَم تَخلَع مَلابِسَها
إِلّا عَلى رَجُلٍ ناهيكَ مِن رَجُلِ

59. The most dishonest people of this time are those who praise them,
So keep silent, and their critics speak truthfully, and say:

٥٩. صُن ماءَ وَجهِكَ عَن ذُلِّ السُؤالِ وَلَو
أَتاكَ إِهراقُهُ بِالمالِ وَالخَوَلِ

60. None but the foolish has become elevated in my eyes,
Lofty in appearance, lowly in heart.

٦٠. وَاِستَرزِقِ اللَهَ مِمّا في خَزائِنِهِ
تُدَل بِفَيضِ أَياديهِ وَلَم تُذَلِ

61. Enough, O Time! I do not cease to thirst,
And I do not see you as a heavy rain cloud.

٦١. ما يُعطِكَ اللَهُ لا يَمنَعكَهُ أَحَدٌ
وَلَيسَ ما بُتَّ مِن شَيءٍ بِمُتَّصَلِ

62. You have persistently turned your back on me, and have not
Inclined toward me nor swerved from your course.

٦٢. فَاِشمَخ بِأَنفِكَ عَن خَزمِ المَطامِعِ لا
تُقِم بِهِ في مَقامِ الآنُفِ الذُّلَلِ

63. You have not stopped oppressing the noble,
While the Prophet's progeny are my model.

٦٣. تَخشى عَرانينُها خَرماً إِذا نَفَرَت
فَالذُّلُّ يَسحَبُها في الرَيثِ وَالعَجَلِ

٦٤. يا نَفسُ صَبراً عَلى ما قَد مُنيتِ بِهِ
فَالحُرُّ يَصبِرُ عِندَ الحادِثِ الجَلَلِ

٦٥. لا بُدَّ أَن يَستَقيلَ الدَهرُ عَثرَتَهُ
فينا وَفي غَيرِنا وَالدَّهرُ ذو دُوَلِ

٦٦. يا مَن تَضَلَّعَ رِيّاً إِن ضَمِنتَ فَما ال
حِرصانُ إِلّا عَلى الظامي مِنَ الأَسِلِ

٦٧. وَما تَرَكتُ مَقالَ الشِّعرِ عَن خَوَرٍ
وَلا اِنتِجاعَ كِرامِ النّاسِ مِن كَسَلِ

٦٨. لَكِن أَروني كَريماً في الزَمانِ وَما
شِئتُم مِنَ المَدحِ فَاِستَملوهُ مِن قِبَلي

٦٩. وَاِستَودِعوا مِن فَمي أَصدافَ سَمعِكُمُ
دُرّاً تَنَظَّمَ شِعراً غَيرَ مُنتَحَلِ

٧٠. إِن كُنتَ مُحتَفِلاً أَو كُنتَ مُرتَجِلاً
فَخَيرُ مُحتَفِلٍ فيهِ وَمُرتَجِلِ

٧١. شَمَختُ مِنهُ إِباءً عَنهُ مُزدَرِياً
بِهِ فَلا ناقَتي فيهِ وَلا جَمَلي

٧٢. وَكَيفَ أَسعى إِلى أَيدٍ أُقَبِّلُها
وَالبَتكُ أَولى بِها عِندي مِنَ القُبَلِ

٧٣. إِذا يَدٌ لَم تُفِد بِالرِّفدِ مُمتَدِحاً
مَعَ الغِنى فَرَماها اللَهُ بِالشَلَلِ

٧٤. لَم يَسمَحِ الدَّهرُ مُذ ألفيتُ فيهِ بِأَن
رَأَيتَني راتِعاً في مَرتَعِ الجَذَلِ

٧٥. أَليَّةً إِن نَأَت عَنّي نَوائِبُهُ
لأَشدُوَنَّ بِأَهزاجي وَبِالرَّمَلِ

٧٦. وَعَيبُ شِعرِيَ أَنَّ الوَردَ يُشبِهُهُ
وَأَنَّ جُلَّ بَني ذا الدَّهرِ كَالجُعَلِ

٧٧. لا تَأسَفَنَّ عَلى ما لَم تَنَلهُ مِنَ ال
دُنيا فَلَيسَ يُنالُ الرِّزقُ بِالحِيَلِ

٧٨. اللَهُ قَدَّرَ لي رِزقاً سَأُدرِكُهُ
لا بُدَّ مِنهُ كَما لا بُدَّ مِن أَجَلي

٧٩. وَالفَضلُ وَالمالُ مَحبوبانِ ما اِجتَمَعا
وَهَل تُوافي الضُحى يَوماً مَعَ الأَصُلِ

٨٠. سَرارَةُ القَلبِ مَأوى سِرِّ كُلِّ فَتىً
مُستَحصَفٍ عَقلُهُ لا رَأيَ لِلمَذِلِ

٨١. مَن لَم تُجانِسهُ فَاِحذَر أَن تُجالِسَهُ
فَالشَمعُ لَم يَحتَرِق إِلّا مِنَ الفَتلِ

٨٢. قَد كانَ في قُلَلِ الأَجبالِ مَسكَنُهُ
فَاِعتاضَ بِالنارِ بَعدَ الشَهدِ وَالعَسَلِ

٨٣. وَالأُنسُ في وَحدَةِ الإِنسانِ مُنفَرِداً
عَنِ الأَخِلّاءِ فَاِهجُرهُم وَلا تُبَلِ

٨٤. ما في زَمانِكَ مَن تُصفي الودادَ لَهُ
مِنَ الأَخِلّاءِ إِلّا وَهوَ ذو دَخَلِ

٨٥. يا مَعشَراً نَبَذوا العَلياءَ نَبذَهُمُ
غُرَّ المَحاسِنِ في قَولٍ وَفي عَمَلِ

٨٦. كَأَنَّهُم في تَعاليهِم حَنابِلَةٌ
يَرَونَ كُلَّ بَني الآدابِ مُعتَزِلي

٨٧. فَلَو رَآهُم أَميرُ المُؤمِنينَ لما
قالَ انحُ ذا النَحوَ يا با الأَسوَدِ الدُّؤَلي

٨٨. مَن باتَ مُمتَدَحاً فيهِم يَقُل سَفَهاً
تَنَحَّ إِنَّ دِماغي غَيرُ مُنفَعِلِ

٨٩. لِلحَقِّ قالَ وَهَل تَلقاهُ مُنفَعِلاً
لِلمَدحِ وَهوَ شَديدُ العِشقِ لِلبَخَلِ

٩٠. فَأَكذَبُ الناسِ في ذا الدَّهرِ مادِحُهُم
فَاِسكُت وَأَصدَقُهُم هاجيهُمُ فَقُلِ

٩١. لَم يَرتَفِع فيهِ عِندي غَيرُ ذي سَفَهٍ
في العَينِ مُرتَفِعٍ في القَلبِ مُستَفِلِ

٩٢. حَتّامَ يا دَهرُ لا أَنفَكّ ذا ظَمَأٍ
وَلا أَراكَ بِوِردٍ ناقِعاً غُلَلي

٩٣. قَلَبتَ لي عامِداً ظَهرَ المِجَنِّ وَلَم
تَعطِف عَلَيَّ وَلَم تَنفَكَّ ذا مَيَلِ

٩٤. وَما بَرِحتَ عَلى الأَحرارِ مُجتَرِئاً
لي أُسوَةٌ في ذَراري خاتَمِ الرُّسُلِ
