News you bring of him make the living souls grieving.

٧. إنَّ الذي جِئْتَ مْنْ تَثْلِيثَ تَنْدُبُهُ
مِنْهُ السّمَاحُ وَمِنْهُ الجودُ وَالغِيَرُ

8. Eyes won't dry though stars rain their tears,
As camels pace dusty over muddy frontier.

٨. تَنَعَى امرأً لاَ تَغُبَّ الحيَّ جَفْنَتُهُ
إذا الكَوَاكِبُ خَوّى نَوْأَها المَطَرُ

9. The white desert fox howls, winter's omen,
Tribes gather stones preparing the barrow.

٩. وَرَاحَتِ الشَّوْلُ مُغْبَرّاً مَنَاكِبُها
شُعْثاً تَغَيّرَ مِنْهَا النَّيُّ وَالوَبَرُ

Then bare mounts once their burdens were lain on earth.

١٠. وَأَجْحَرَ الكَلْبَ مُبْيَضُّ الصَّقِيعِ بِهِ
وَضَمّت الحيَّ مِنْ صُرّادِهِ الحُجَرُ

11. Unsheathed swords strike, their gleam blinds gazers,
Biting through napes where blood spurts like red fountains.

١١. عَلَيْهِ أَوّلُ زَادِ القَوْمِ قَدْ عَلِموا
ثُمَّ المَطيَّ إذا ما أَرْمَلوا جَزَرُوا

12. A brother of wanderers, bounty was theirs when present,
In their absence, caution and vigilance pleasant.

١٢. لا تَأْمَنُ البازلُ الكوماءُ ضَرْبَتَهُ
بِالمَشْرَفيّ إذا ما اخْرَوّطَ السّفَرُ

13. Shooting star of wars, lighting dark nights,
Like the moon lights up surface of black lava bright.

١٣. قَدْ تَكْظِمُ البُزْلُ مِنْهُ حِينَ يَفْجؤها
حَتّى تَقَطَّعَ في أَعْنَاقِها الجِرَرُ

14. Snorting charger, day presses without rest,
Nightshirt ripped, gallant show its best.

١٤. أَخُو رَغَائِبَ يُعْطِيهَا وَيَسْأَلُها
يَخْشَى الظُّلامَةَ مِنْهُ النَّوْفَلُ الزَّفَرُ

15. Giant stallion, brother of trust now lain,
Generous and glorious his fame remains.

١٥. مَنْ لَيْسَ في خَيْرِهِ مَنٌّ يُكَدّرُهُ
عَلَى الصَّدِيقِ وَلاَ في صَفْوِهِ كَدَرُ

16. Knight who spurred mount through night in frays,
A people with no water or trees to allay.

١٦. يَمْشي بِبَيْدَاءَ لا يَمْشي بِهَا أَحَدٌ
وَلاَ يُحَسُّ خَلاَ الخافي بِهَا أَثَرُ

17. No shying at what the pot contained for them,
Nor biting raw meat however fierce the hunger pang.

١٧. كَأَنّهُ بَعْدَ صِدْقِ القَوْمِ أَنْفُسَهم
بِالبأسِ يَلْمَعُ مِنْ أَقْدَامِهِ الشّرَرُ

18. A morsel of grilled meat avails when craved,
Quenching thirst if the sweet rainwater’s saved.

١٨. وَلَيْسَ فِيهِ إذا اسْتَنْظَرْتَهُ عَجَلٌ
وَلَيْسَ فيهِ إذا ياسَرْتَهُ عُسُرُ

19. Safe from his rage at dawn or dusk aren’t folks,
In each ravine though no battle cry invokes.

١٩. إمّا يُصِبْهُ عَدوٌّ في مُنَاوَأةٍ
يَوْماً فَقَدْ كَانَ يَسْتَعلي وَيَنْتَصِرُ

20. Impatient for their cauldrons to boil ere sunrise,
Eyes clear not of rheum till hands can rub.

٢٠. أَخُو حُروبٍ وَمِكْسَابٌ إذا عَدَمُوا
وفي المَخَافَةِ مِنْهُ الجِدُّ والحَذَرُ

21. No tired ligaments however far he roams,
Ever ahead of clan, all wrongs he redresses.

٢١. مِردَى حُروبٍ شِهابٌ يُسْتَضَاءُ بِهِ
كَمَا أَضَاءَ سَوَادَ الصَّخْيَةِ القَمَرُ

22. We lived an era with him then departed he did,
Like the two-edged spear that finally split.

٢٢. مُهَفْهَفٌ أَهْضَمُ الكَشْحَينِ مُنْخَرِقٌ
عَنْهُ القَمِيصُ لِسَيْرِ اللّيْلِ مُحْتَقِرُ

23. How excellent you were when asked for bounty!
How ready to defend us against calamity!

٢٣. ضَخْمُ الدّسِيعَةِ متلافٌ أَخُو ثِقةٍ
حَامِي الحَقِيقةِ مِنْهُ الجُودُ والفَخَرُ

24. You have attained inviolable kin,
Hind daughter of Sallama, but no triumph for you therein.

٢٤. طاوي المَصِيرِ على العَزّاءِ مُنْجَرِدٌ
بِالقَوْمِ لَيْلَةَ لا ماءٌ ولا شَجَرُ

25. If we despair, disaster caused us to waver;
If we're patient, we are a people of composure.

٢٥. لاَ يَتَأرّى لِمَأ في القِدْرِ يَرْقبُهُ
ولا يَعَضّ على شُرسُوفِهِ الصَّفَرُ

26. But for vile betrayal, your feats would have flowed;
A stream irrigating people, or flooding the broad.

٢٦. تَكْفِيهِ فِلْذَةُ لَحْمٍ إنْ أَلمّ بِهَا
مِنَ الشِّواءِ وَيَروي شُرْبَهُ الغَمَرُ

27. Kill him and your women are up for grabs;
To him belong stratagems and bold attacks.

٢٧. لاَ يَأْمَن النّاسُ مُمْسَاهُ وَمُصْبَحَهُ
في كلّ فَجٍ وإنْ لَمْ يَغزُ يُنْتَظَرُ

28. If you take a path, you tread, consequences unfold;
So go, and may God not make you strayed and distraught!

٢٨. المُعَجّلُ القَوْمِ أَنْ تَغلي مَرَاجِلُهُمْ
قَبْلَ الصَّبَاحِ وَلَمّا يُمْسَحِ البَصَرُ

٢٩. لاَ يَغْمِزُ السّاقَ مِنْ أَيْنٍ ولا نَصَبٍ
وَلاَ يَزَالُ أَمَامَ القَوْمِ يَغْتَفِرُ

٣٠. عِشْنَا بِهِ بُرْهَةً دَهْراً فَوَدّعَنا
كَذَلِكَ الرِّمْحُ ذُو النّصْلَيْنِ يَنْكَسِرُ

٣١. فَنِعْمَ مَا أَنْتَ عِنْدَ الخَيْرِ تَسْأَلُهُ
وَنِعْمَ مَا أَنْتَ عِنْدَ البأسِ تَحْتَضِرُ

٣٢. أَصَبْتَ في حُرُمٍ مِنّا أَخَأ ثِقَةٍ
هِنْدَ بْنَ سَلْمَى فَلاَ يَهْنَا لَكَ الظَّفَرُ

٣٣. فإنْ جَزَعْنَا فإنّ الشّرّ أَجْزَعَنَا
وَإنْ صَبَرْنَا فَإنَّا مَعْشَرٌ صُبُرُ

٣٤. لَوْ لَمْ يخُنْهُ نَفِيلٌ لاسْتَمَرّ بِهِ
وِردٌ يُلِمَ بِهَذَا النّاسِ أَوْ صَدَرُ

٣٥. إنْ تَقْتُلُوهُ فَقَدْ تُسْبَى نِسَاؤُكُمُ
وَقَدْ تَكُونُ لَهُ المُعْلاَةُ وَالخَطَرُ

٣٦. فإنْ سَلَكْتَ سَبيلاً كُنْتَ سَالِكَها
فَاذْهَبْ فَلاَ يُبْعِدَنْكَ اللَّهُ مُنْتَشِرُ
