1. She returned like the addict's incense stick
He intends to quit but doesn't

2. She leans towards me so I tremble
For her intimate longing embrace

3. Like the believer's memories
Sweet to him in weakness

4. Either it accompanies him, so I accompany
Taking the same path as my friend

5. So the magic blows from the writer
And passion disrupts fate

6. And the heart's stupor sleeps
The broker's sleep, never to awake

7. I denied my features
And prayed the prayer of a dreamer

8. From my world to worlds
Where for each wish there's a path

9. My body was like a speck
In the wind or a breath

10. Taken by a soft breeze
To the intimate companion in the ether

11. I saw my fervent passion
And the spirit listening closely

12. Its years passed before me
So I swooned from the sacred brilliance

13. I saw I should move forward
But I feared so I was silent

14. I restrained my ardour after
I raved like a delicate branch

15. I greeted so it smiled
And hurried to so we reconciled

16. And I asked it to speak
And redo the poem of carnelian

17. It said the tongue of woes has passed
Beauty here and beauty

18. Are not like our world
We imagined, O friend

19. Wine here has a murmur
Wine with no baseness is sweet

20. So the spirit is a stranger
Free from every limb

21. It drinks but has no cup
And feels joy like you

22. So if you seek its phantom
Only a delicate transparency

23. A secret radiates its brilliance
So when you grasp it's like air

24. Nothing, but in enduring
Hidden from the living drowned

25. Knowledge here, not your knowledge
And poetry not like your poetry

26. Creation not your creation
Our drink is that wine

27. The houris and boys around me
In my best climate of summer

28. Sweet and fine surroundings
Forget the burning world

29. Al-Mutanabbi stands serving me
And al-Buhturi accompanies me

30. Abu Nuwas and I socialize
Recalling old intimate times

31. And indeed with my limbo
Is Hafez, best company

32. Forgetting the east's ease
Still in hardship and distress

33. My people's prayer enveloped me
So I won the blissful lodging

34. And the Rich God's consent
This is the true triumph

35. The east is the lord's east
With a people Egypt aids

36. And the free bound by hands
So dead I'm their friend

37. Return to your people, greet them
Forget me, and declare to their life

38. I sought for their life
A fitting status if one dies

39. And then a figure appears
My people in this gathering

40. Agonize for the traveler
A friend's agony, the friend cries
