1. Had it not been for love of you, I would have lived long,
But you burdened me, so I became slain,

Though it had long been beautiful,

3. And you made the lover's glance agonized,
Weeping over past conversations morning and evening,

And by how you ennobled a group and tribe,

5. I have not complained of the pain of estrangement, but

6. Quenched by days I enjoyed in their goodness,
In which I accustomed myself to nearness and intimation,

7. It did not lack the madness of passion, and I

8. I indulged in it, being generous, and long
Excess in love was ruinous,

9. I enjoyed in it my gazing, and perhaps
I attained from it embrace and kissing,

10. I attained from it what I sought, and my chastity
Cannot depart from my heart,

11. And I walked at night with the gait of an ascetic
Who was accustomed to humility and chanting well,

12. I yearn for that time, it has passed
And I remained bewildered after its going,

13. Confused, grieving the enemy in my bewilderment
Like the night, worried, and the slaughtered, timid,

14. I find the way to crying but will not see
After separation, a way to solace,

15. They envy you, O Zaki, and if they saw
Your complaints, they would suffer your agony,

16. O you who go, my heart does not go
From what it knew though you went far,

17. I have not forgotten your traits over time
Like flowers, fragrant, and nectar, accepting,

18. God knows I did not mention your company
Except I collapsed on the bed, sick,

19. I was not concerned except for our covenant which
Became lengthened by the judgment of time,

20. And I despaired when after my hope
The air pulled its hems over the traces,

21. It disturbed my sleep and unleashed my tears
When I resolved to depart from the abode,

22. So if I forget – and I don't think you will do it –
I will unleash torrents on my cheeks,

23. And I will leave my food and drink
And increase over your estrangement wailing,

24. Away with a heart that through you seeks a companion!
If I live after you, I disavow all favors,

25. I am he who knew his loyalty and affection
So spare me if you find other than me,

26. Loyalty is scarce – you don't know a lover
Unless I feared betrayal and change,

27. From me is greetings to meet you and your kindness
And your perfection morning and evening,

28. For you are more truthful than she I desired in affection
And you are more generous than those I knew in origin,
