1. The morning mountains wept for him,
And the mountains were made happy by it.
١. بَكَى فَرثَت له أَجبالُ صُبحٍ
وأسعَدتِ الجِبالَ بها مُرُوتُ
2. A Hejazi, his love clinging to Najd,
Neither able to live nor die.
٢. حِجَازِيُّ الهَوَى عَلِقٌ بِنَجدٍ
جَوِيٌّ لا يَعِيشُ ولا يَمُوتُ
3. The caravans deter him for their howling,
And the ardour of night surrenders him.
٣. فَتَردَعُه الدَّبُور لها أَجِيجٌ
ويُسلِمه إِلى الوَجدِ المَبِيتُ
4. As if his heart were the palm of a drowning man,
Struggled over by a whale at sea's edge.
٤. كأَنَّ فؤادَه كَفَّا غَرِيقٍ
تَنازَعَهُ بِشَطِّ البَحرِ حُوتُ
5. You have an eye, Hind, with kohl adorned,
And a heart soon to be lost or wasted.
٥. لِهندٍ منكَ عَينٌ ذاتُ سَجلٍ
وقَلبٌ سَوفَ يُفقَدُ أَو يَفُوتُ
6. When they two afflict a sick man with their harm,
The disease they aid has no assuager.
٦. إِذا اكتَنَفا بِضَرِّهِما سَقِيماً
يُعادِى الدّاء ليس لَهُ مُقِيتُ
