1. The branches are stained with blood red,
And the flowers of the meadow are beautiful,
١. والعصر مخضوب البنان
و أزهار الحقل الحسان
2. And the morning fills with dew,
The fragrance of the oleander groves,
٢. و الصبح يملأ بالندى
عطرا سلال الأقحوان
3. And the moon that shelters,
The night has my infatuation,
٣. و البدر و هو مظله
لليل تمتلك افتناني
4. The heart is lost in its passion,
And in humiliation from its love,
٤. إن الفؤاد لفي ضلال
من هواه و في هوان
5. What is inside the bewildered heart,
It became a home for wishes,
٥. ما داخل الحب الفؤا
د فعاد بيتا للأماني
6. Or spent the night in a garden and woke up,
With a blossoming smile of joy,
٦. أو بات في روض و أص
بح باسما نضر المجاني
7. Comfort came down and its inhabitants,
So it was empty of music,
٧. هبط النعيم و ساكنيه
فرده خلو المغاني
8. Ask about it the meadows’ flowers,
On their streams ask the guardians,
٨. سل عنه أزهار الحقول
على جداولها حواني
9. Ask the apple blossom the talkative,
Of secrets and meanings,
٩. سل زهرة التفاح ضا
حكة الأسرة و المعاني
10. O apple blossom, why don’t you,
Tell us about paradise,
١٠. يا زهرة التفاح هلا
تخبرين عن الجنان
11. The day desire provoked it,
And they both started throbbing,
١١. يوم استفز بها الهوى
فلبين باتا يخفقان
12. Tell us the story of the banished,
As you are the narrator of time,
١٢. اروي لنا نبأ ( الطريد )
فأنت راوية الزمان
13. “Eve” seduced him, so he,
Stretched his hands to the snakes,
١٣. أغوته ( حواء ) فمد
يديه نحو الأفعوان
14. They tasted the fruit God forbade,
To both yet they made permissible,
١٤. ثمر يحرمه الإله
عليهما و يحللان
15. So they tasted and became transgressors,
How would the transgressors be punished?
١٥. ذاقا فكانا ظالمين
فكيف يجزي الظالمان
16. And their nakedness appeared to them,
There were the two evils,
١٦. وبدا الموارى منهما
فإذا هنالك سوءتان
17. And they started sewing from the leaves,
Covers to conceal themselves,
١٧. و عليهما طفقا من الو
رق المهدل يخصفان
18. Oh what misery that God exposed them,
And only added more humiliation,
١٨. يا بؤس من فضح الإله
و لم يزده سوى الهوان
19. Spring did not know the autumn,
Taking off the beautiful leaves,
١٩. لم يعرف الدوح الخريف
و نزع أوراق حسان
20. Until it shed its leaves,
The two sinful lovers.
٢٠. حتى نضى ورقاته
