Spreading their joy in elegy

6. And challenged the tyrants with bared arms
Worker or farmer

7. He was in slumber but when you filled
Sleep in his eyelids with specters

8. He rose angry, avenging vengeance with vengeance
And walked on the flames of struggle

9. O eyes of affliction, without you the curtains would not have extended
Eyes to the jesting veil

10. Seeing injustice naked and tyrants
Like leaves of a board in the winds

11. The traitor bared a dagger in the darkness of night
And pounced on the forbidden sanctuary

12. So a nation was guided by the gleam of the blade
And the blood of victims overflowed

13. And a smile from a martyr lit up
And walked over a passage of wounds

14. Revenge roared so rise up victims
And cast off your cool indifference

15. Whenever the gloom inflamed Baghdad's sorrow
And its tears overflowed the elegy

16. And look, do you see anything but my apparitions
And my days striking ease with unease

17. And look, your drunken tattoo still
Flying free above the earth

18. And ask the mournful grave of Ja'far al-Nard
What was the fault of these souls?

19. Ja'far the true, O anthem of heroism
Sung beneath the shade of the roof

20. Reach out from your bloodied grave with your right hand
For you still carry the lantern

21. You tore the darkness of night with light
So do not sorrow the eyelid of the butcher
