1. I wept for the abodes and their ruins
And time has changed their appearance

2. And I lamented the vicissitudes of fate that afflicted them
None of their ruins equals what remains of them

3. In my innermost being is anguish for the past
That tears my very joints with longing

4. Indeed my tears have given me free rein
And I did not say then, “What is the matter with them?”

5. I recalled the era of my youth and passion
That stirs the soul with its first stirrings,

6. And the fleeting pleasures that fate stole
From the days of my youth but killed them

7. An era in which the ruins lie fallow
And my playfulness chastises me,

8. And I walk about intoxicated
Letting the gentle wind incline me

9. And many a maiden in the nights of union
I gathered with anklets and bracelets

10. And I still quaff from their saliva
And drink deep their redolence

11. If your saliva brings souls back to life
Then your glance is their killer

12. And a cupbearer whom beauty did cover
With the wings of night that told of her mole

13. She passes around the bright wine
Relating thereby the sparkling of its pourer

14. Two respective warriors in their arena
Whose blades make their heroes fall

15. So excellent was that smooth wine
When the youth poured freely

16. I am not one to dwell on what is past
Though I neglected it before

17. And nights whose details I did not manifest
When I gave but their overall picture

18. And I stride like the gait of an ostrich
Or the pacing of a seeker for pasture

19. As if I undertook by it to traverse
The horizons of countries and climes

20. I crossed the barren lands and sailed the seas
And experienced hardships and tribulations

21. And I tried the scions of this age
And time acquainted me with their states

22. It is I whom you know
Who shouldered the heaviest of burdens

23. And if little there be in my hands
I do not complain of the times ignoring me

24. And if I am raised in the cradle of honors
It is recent favors that speak of my deeds

25. It suffices you from one whose hand
Becomes long but does not overreach

26. And if the complexities of affairs limp
I untangle and explain their complications

27. And in the rhyme scheme a digression
From the discourse, Salman spoke it

28. And made it an example in praise
Sending it to whom he wished

29. A young man who follows in the footsteps of his forebears
Whose qualities resemble their deeds

30. They attain from God the blessing of reward
And they spend their wealth for God

31. The dew springs from their palms
And gives drink to whom they wish

32. Of the eminent nobles, the pure ones
Who adorn the ages and generations

33. God has indeed purified those persons
And set their deeds toward goodness

34. O sons of succor, the prime of men
When hardship besets the people with its horrors

35. And their deeds in all proper behavior
In righteousness precede their words

36. And I continue to mention their merit
And I thank their favors

37. With how many in times of hardship
When horrors beset the people with their intensity

38. You were the people’s mainstays
And their substitutes among all people

39. And if the earth were devoid of your like
The earth would shake with a massive quake

40. O Father of Mustafa, you are the rain clouds
Cloaking thereby what you pour forth

41. The market of poetry exhausted itself on you
And your gifts were its intermediaries

42. And when I attained my utmost hopes
And delivered myself to its highest aspirations

43. The leadership came seeking you
Dragging the trains of its gowns

44. And surrendered its reins to you
Manifesting to your honor its submission

45. A inherited from your pure forefathers
None other than them attained it

46. In you, through you and from you we see
The aspects of good fortune turning

47. If you were not suited for it
Among the excellent, who else could make claim?

48. So you attained what none other attained
Merits for which we thank their Bountiful

49. Your words heal the breasts of men
And please kings and their officials

50. And however faults creep into it
Your sound opinion corrects their imbalance

51. And how many a hand stretched forth
Have you preceded in benevolence?

52. And if the door of favors closes
Then you open its locks
