1. With a sword whose blade was separation he drew near,
As though I had come to ask him for union.

2. My tears rained down my cheeks continuously,
While he was harsh and turned away from me.

3. And no matter how much humiliation I showed before him,
He only grew haughtier and more coy.

4. The full moon told him of its perfection, shyly,
And the slender branch matched his tall stature.

5. His beauty heralded the passion found in him,
So we saw roses in his cheeks.

6. In my heart is a fire, the burning of his cheek,
That sets my innermost being aflame.

7. In my body is the sickness of eyes that fascinate,
From which has come to me a grave, tormenting disease.

8. I shall not forget the one with the fragrant abode,
Though that time has passed, I still deem it a dream.

9. There was a time when we feared no separation
And heard no hurtful words.

10. How often clear wine visited me,
Quenching my burning thirst.

11. My night with him was always too short,
But when my loved one departed, it dragged on.

12. How can the sleepless one hope for rest,
When my eyelids flow with ceaseless tears?

13. Will a flashing glimmer guide me
When it has only further led me astray?

14. Do not ask when faced with evil, for tears,
If the injustice pours forth profusely.

15. That band from the encampment burdened me with murder
And before them my blood was never lawful.

16. If you had seen when they departed with my heart,
You’d have seen patience following after beauty.

17. Oh what their eyelids have done to my heart,
Ceaselessly unsheathing swords.

18. A Lord who dressed the loved ones in beauty
Adorned me in their attributes.

19. In love and desire I am as Muhammad was,
Achieving the utmost level of perfection.

20. A young man, a sea of knowledge and generosity,
Whose presence was as sweet as fresh water.

21. With a resolve that told of lofty ambitions
And a manner that recalled the north wind.

22. Naturally inclined towards magnanimity,
Without ever tiring of spending wealth.

23. The most beloved of people in his eyes
Is one who makes requests of him always.

24. He loves acts of kindness at all times,
And we never find weariness in him.

25. His help to the fortunate was connection,
And to his enemies - tribulation.

26. God crowned him with a crown of glory,
Cloaking him in awe and majesty.

27. If God’s mountains disappeared from around it,
His dignity upon them would be as mountains.

28. The palm of his generous hand is a cloud,
That if it touched the pebbles rain would flow from it.

29. His right hand has never withheld,
Nor known appointments or procrastination.

30. With some of his mighty determination,
He could attain the far horizons.

31. The cheer of his face foretells clouds of generosity,
As the smiles of the generous are moles.

32. We attained through him the difficult hopes,
And knew no impossibilities in his dominion.

33. An ocean of knowledge and the greatest attainment
Of that which souls desire in this world.

34. He emerged as a moon then as a light,
Becoming unmatched in splendor.

35. He extended his hand one day in expansion,
Inundating us with gifts and connection.

36. God endowed him with excellent traits,
And that is the Exalted Creator's giving.

37. Penetrative intimacies like sharp swords,
Carved out through his polished virtues.

38. If we say to the world “beautiful one,”
We mean the beauty of your manners and traits.

39. Can panegyrists number the totality of his perfection?
And who can count the grains of sand on earth?

40. You have not exaggerated in your praise of him,
Even if you ramble on at length hyperbolizing.

41. I seek refuge in his might from every hardship,
For he has disciplined the world.

42. A determination that vanquishes enemies forcibly,
Even if you have not seen him in battle.

43. If the highest summits opposed
His attainment of his every desire, still he would reach them.

44. He has completed every science and pride,
And embellished glories and perfections.

45. He is none but a full moon in the horizons,
So no wonder that he has attained perfection.

46. If you observed the most precise explanation from him
You would find an unmatched clarity.

47. God guides creation rightly through him
And removes misguidance through him.

48. He left people no pride to take,
Nor words for opponents to speak.

49. Thus, my brother’s hopes were not dashed,
Making your satisfaction his destination.

50. Take it, my master, as a poem from me,
And make your pleasure with it my fortune.
