1. You came like the swift-moving attackers,
So you were blessed from Dan to us and back.

2. You rose like the full moon in the darkness of night
In your condition, from the obscurity of night - so welcome!

3. And you came like the arrival of all good fortune
With shining white teeth and a smiling mouth.

4. Hopes surround you from every side,
And horsemen guard you from every sharp sword.

5. You left no saliva that you didn’t water,
So it became lush in the softness of life.

6. Whenever you wanted, you left the country as if
The attackers had watered it, wave after wave.

7. And if you say, you left no speech for the speaker,
And you don’t fear the blame of any blamer in God.

8. You came like rain and the rain is less than you,
When it flows in its flags and landmarks.

9. And you came with the heroes of men leading them,
Statues of the accumulating, gushing torrent.

10. Whenever they took counsel one day at your command,
They rushed to carry out your lofty command in Dar Al-Dhiraan.

11. The breasts of the armored ones tremble their spears -
Were the straight ones a path for the composer?

12. Foreigners have settled in the abode of the city,
And did not corrupt its morals with foreigners.

13. Obedient in the fray, daring in the struggle,
And their stances are known in the battles.

14. They gained no booty but pride,
And there is no pride but from the equal divider.

15. You visited those who, if it was thought you wouldn't visit them,
Saw their existing honor as delusional dreams.

16. A people who honored you despite themselves,
And you distinguished between them with signs.

17. If they count your success for the people as a blessing,
You, praise God, are above blessings.

18. For them in you is pride as long as you remained for them,
And no pride but from you always endures.

19. And you took on a matter none can take on but you,
And not everyone upon it can remain standing.

20. You sprouted among us after Jesus and Bandar,
The shelters of the attackers and fierce lions.

21. And God did not destroy the building that they represent,
And you are for them a lofty, well-founded house.

22. And those stars did not fail to shower with rain
Of desires, hoped for in those seasons.

23. So you came until death itself feared you,
And the parting had no invincible defender against you.

24. And you fought until you found no challenger,
And collided until you found no collider.

25. You subdued the noses of calamities, so they retreated
In the humiliation of one suppressed, to the honor of a subduer.

26. So we did not see time turn back a warrior
That the cedars conceded to other than peacefully.

27. If you support the oppressed in the world,
Then this world never raged with injustice.

28. You extended a hand whose attainment was abundant,
And whose reach in its back was far-extending and adhesive.

29. You spread by it news of Ka’b and Hatem there,
Though the news of Ka’b and Hatem has been folded up.

30. You descended, high flags, to Al-Shum the drencher,
Ships of the highest signs and milestones.

31. You ascended by way of the summits to yet higher summits,
Of glory, which cannot be ascended by ladders.

32. Your songs are spoils for the visitors -
So reward with those songs the spoils!

33. I see the people in droves to the light of your fire,
Riders of mounts, lofty in determination.

34. So from a well-known person hoping for the generosity of a lord,
And from a plaintiff hoping for the compassion of a merciful one.

35. Yes, your homes are for the comers -
Homes of glory, dew, and generosity.

36. Rescue for the anguished, and safety for the fearful,
Refuge for the protected, and meadow for the seeker.

37. Abodes none has inhabited but the glorious,
Noble in nature, from generous clans.

38. You closed off the masters with power and attainment
With favor, benevolence, spears, and swords.

39. So do not care after this for one who sits back
As you did not care if you yourselves sat back.

40. And let not one whose blood your swords did not spill
Think your obedience was out of fear of a ruler.

41. For it was nothing but obedience and favor
Upon one for whom you have a thousand servants.

42. So his pleasure was what pleased you for his decisiveness,
And one who rejects your pleasure cannot decide.

43. If calamities from him one day collided with you,
He would wake to be a collider full of regret.

44. His eye saw some of your might
And it was for him then an awakening of a sleeper.

45. For it saw as momentous what it had seen and startled it
The majesty of tremendous things in tremendous affairs.

46. And nothing the beholders from Muhammad’s family saw
Resembled you in its elapsed ages.

47. Faces shining like the dawn when it gleamed,
And hands - but above the hands of clouds.

48. And a white-hot iron unsheathed by your palms
Which you sheathed in skulls and bodies.

49. It laments the dead the morning after its clash
With the laments of a dove - not the laments of doves.

50. When it smiled as it bloodied the polytheists’ wounds,
It wept with sincere blood by those smiles.

51. With it you protected Iraq’s land and its people,
And fortified them with spears and swords.

52. Kings ransom themselves, whose attainment is not hoped for,
And from which no flash of generosity appeared for the reprehensible.

53. You avoided those kings which you see
Avoid the ambition of those who seek them improperly.

54. By the One who gave you what you deserve,
And made you sovereign over the worlds!

55. If I could do without the rest of creation,
My meadow then would be from my surging sea.

56. So I have not said a verse but about you alone,
Nor did my pen one day flow with praise of a human.

57. So live in peace and submit to us and others,
For glory is nothing but what you attained safely.
