1. Cease blaming me, for blame does not avail
My malady is my plague, my illness is my bane

2. A body accustomed to woe and misery
Filled with burning passion, desire, and love's pain

3. When the doctor was perplexed by my condition
And diagnosis failed with only guesswork to remain

4. He knew not the illness of my heart, nor what
I concealed from him of agonies and strain

5. My body is wasted recalling separation
The fire of separation scorched my bones and veins

6. Oh days of departure in Al-Ghuwair, how I wish
For those days in that land, what days they were!

7. Days when the bond of love I did not break
As if it were a kinship tie, a bond I bear

8. In the garden I sucked the nectar of life
While destiny's first down on my cheek grew hair

9. The singers, if their doves in Dhawh cooed,
The branches danced, waving with flair

10. I listened to the melody of the lutes
And drank deep drafts commingled with pearls rare

11. When I took up the cup, I said to my friend:
"Living in your world is a draft everlasting to share"

12. Days when I felt secure from parting's blow
Deeming time itself my servant and hire

13. They passed like a mirage, those days
How similar are days to dreams, if you ponder and stare!

14. To the nights of Ar-Rabba that were mine
My greatest desires and wishes repair

15. Oh stage of Al-Hamra, will you return there?
Oh stage of tranquility, my haven and lair

16. You were witness to a passionate lover
Consumed by fervor, captivated and snared

17. When the camels of departure loaded their packs
And feet were set firm on the stirrups to fare

18. She showered pearls of tears upon me
More radiant than the necklaces of brides fair

19. If you blame me for loving ceaselessly
Passion rends me apart from censurers' glare

20. How many nights after you have I passed
Herding the stars, shepherd to night clouds bare

21. Hoping for dawn, but no dawn came
As though it were a vineyard I hoped to prepare

22. No sweeter than to meet the beloved's abode
If the distant one would allow me to share

23. For your nights the tears poured down my cheek
As rain pouring from heaven midst lightning's flare

24. I dampened her vestiges' earth with my tears
While my crying and wailing the clouds did tear

25. Recalling them in my heart, O Zumayya
Was naught but agonizing, unending despair

26. I nearly expire from yearning and longing
For those days, pressing my fingers in prayer

27. By God, O breezes of Najd, convey
My greetings of peace and salutations there

28. To the Abode of Peace, for they are
The beauty of time and its newly grown hair

29. I swear my heart will not be solaced by them
I plead and swear, though oaths the truthful ensnare

30. A tribe whose dart I had met mid them
Struck this heart - that thrower hit his mark with care

31. Will the abode return there, after they have gone?
My meadow, my ruin - they were woven with my own hair

32. I see the glory of Abi Al-Thanaa
As dawn's light shimmering through darkness and despair

33. A man whose share of merit outstrips all others
Merit apportioned, as livelihood all men share

34. Our law fell glorious through a noble Chieftain
Pride of laws, magnificent wisdom and care

35. He who found refuge in him from the world
Found refuge in a banner aloft in the air

36. A mountain that shadowed creation though it was not
Like barren peak towering high in its lair

37. Despite braying detractors, he has a glory
When glories are recounted, most proud and most rare

38. If you see his foe, vicious and hostile in feud
Baring teeth as argument flares

39. There you see prophetics majesty
Vanquishing, heads bowed down in prayer

40. With eloquence bound to clarity
Rendering the eloquent mute in despair

41. Mind stands in thrall, confounded, beyond it
Hesitating to proceed or draw back with care

42. Puzzling matters that would confound sages' minds
Were unveiled, inspiring minds beyond compare

43. A maiden whose cover he never unveiled
With cloak or veil for another man there

44. Though his tongue was sweet as honey in flow
Sharper than sword's edge when righteous ire he would bare

45. I saw his soul was as his tongue
Both of them sharp like a piercing blade bare

46. Evidence by which his thoughts astounded
Pouncing like the lion free of his lair

47. Attained the utmost in virtues all
Even graciousness, even excellence rare

48. If he touched barren rock it would burst forth
Gushing with bounty, goodness beyond compare

49. Return to that sea of bounty - it is a sea
Of bounties, surging, abundant and fair

50. Ask what you will - you'll attain your wishes, every one
Without unraveling complexities or pursuing false air

51. Rejoice in the Euphrates and its abundance; at dawn
You smell its breath, smiling, sweet, debonair

52. His pens gloried over canebrakes proud
For I saw all glory was for pens there

53. A script that delighted all who beheld it
Fairer to the eye than a youth of windswept hair

54. As though it knit the stars in necklaces
In texts, shining, for all days debonair

55. For those seeking truth, there is a spring therein
To solace hearts and water spirits arid and bare

56. The Maker never revealed the reality of His Grace
Except to reveal the power of Al-Islam there

57. God is Greatest! You are greatest sign
That appeared with greatest sign among all men fair

58. You satisfied the people of guidance and provoked
Among them that satisfaction bitter gall and despair

59. With discussions of truth in its field
Drawing back every feeble pretender there

60. How I listed your merits, savored by my pen
One morn when I listed them in text and voice with care

61. But how can I list them, enumerate each mark
With no end to numbers or digits there?

62. Yet I saw praising you has ample reward
So I wiped away all blame that would my sins ensnare

63. In believers' hearts is a love for you
Intermingled in flesh and soul with tender care

64. Thanks for your endless gifts - they
Raised me, despite enviers keen on pulling me down from my lair

65. With the train of your grace I have bound my resolve;
Should my days fray, your robe will my deeds repair

66. If you ask of me, I have always been
Burdened by need and endless dark despair

67. I wake like an abject camel, destiny leads me on
By the nose, though I have no reins her course to steer

68. Farewell, greetings of peace and my salutations
To the Abode of Peace, their beauty, their freshly grown hair
