1. I have attained, by the grace of God, what I sought
For long while your requests weakened me

2. So I came to hope for nothing but what I aspired to
With purpose, and I have no other desires besides you

3. And I used to blame fate angrily
But now I do not blame fate for anything

4. If I was a sinner before today and yesterday
Well, repentance for that sin has come to me

5. I found the days gentle through you, my master
And time that fought me is now peaceful with me

6. And I sensed in your generosity to me every flash of lightning
Your help is hoped for and your rain pouring

7. So neither far-reaching nor lofty hopes
Remain with me, nor do the faces of requests grow pale

8. And how can hopes succeed if they are short
Or attain except through your fulfillment of desires?

9. The flock behaved well after they
Had done it wrong with calamities and disasters

10. You inspired them, as you guided them, with wisdom
Indeed this wisdom brings good

11. You held back the hands of evildoers from every side
So no more plunder and no more pillaging remains

12. And who is like the minister you appointed, my Lord
Whose experience has tested him

13. Discerning in managing affairs and knowing
What their beginnings will lead to in the end

14. You humiliated dangers, though formidable
They became easy for him through your tribulations

15. You see the morning of opinion and command obscured
So the darkness of calamities is dispelled through you

16. You supported him in the harshness of affliction
So he supported you in the harshness of affliction

17. Thus he does not refrain from showing people his gentleness
And though absent, his might and wrath are present with them

18. Your might, not gleaming swords nor spears
Your presence, not what the clouds rain down

19. You have continued until glory takes its vengeance
And virtues shine in their horizons

20. Through your hands the magic of speech, not speech bends
So those slender waists bend to it

21. Pens bow down before you, prostrate on parchment
At what you dictate and what you write

22. If you wish, they become in the enemies like unsheathed blades
While it is inconceivable that they rage when you unleash them

23. They pierce the ears of men with wisdom
Whether you relate it gently or draw analogies

24. When they are molded in the crucible of thought, they are adorned
And are weighed by discerning minds in those crucibles

25. With them is nourishment for intellects and a canon
That justifies and clarifies perspectives for them

26. You wielded elegant and coarse speech
So you are glorious, however you wish, and artful

27. You took each of them down every course
And those courses did not narrow for you

28. Thus whoever recalls a passion that melts one's reserve
At the like of it the tear of the bereft melts

29. And whoever spins gentle sweetness, it is as if
Its dwellings are theaters of tranquility and playgrounds

30. And in lasting good deeds is reward
From God that emerges from behind the sun's veil

31. You stamped on the party of war an elite
Who take them to task for their making and call them to account

32. Travelers transmitted them from you, so they became
Answers to a land, and folds were traversed with them

33. Enraging the people who gained
Corrupted profits in disgraceful ways from them

34. You raged at them for God, without compromise
While unlike you others fear harshness and watch

35. Gifts from a generous Lord you were granted
And these things are none but gifts

36. I wander dragging the train of your merit
Though I am but the trails of dust trailing it

37. Compared to the one who did not take his stand with the noble
And none can represent him in reality as his deputy

38. For you brought Baghdad and its people comfort
After troubles had wearied it before that

39. One whose long life was spent in power
His relatives joyous and foreigners

40. And if I say none has come to Iraq like him
I speak no falsehood

41. He illuminated its regions and sides for us
As a rare gem of the world and delight of its people

42. My master, I have no means of attaining
Your intimacy though I desire it

43. If I weigh the beauties of my poetry
Against your poetry, by justice mine are blemishes

44. Though I prolong my praise of you, I fall short
Even if my poetry about you is apt

45. I congratulate you on a position you are above
By a rank the ranks have not done justice to

46. For you have ennobled all positions
And you are not one whom positions have ennobled

47. I praised myself, Iraq, its people
And every worthy and appropriate person

48. And sent to it every virgin bride
As gazelles were sent to the beautiful slender waists

49. Meters by which we heal hearts, and perhaps
Because of which scorpions sting the envious

50. I thanked you with the thanks of a blossoming garden
And gratitude to you is obligatory and praising you a duty

51. Yet my poetry cannot fully thank you
Even if the stars were to be strung in verse for you

52. Of the excellent praise with which God has gifted me
Its horizons filled, and its Wests

53. My every eulogy is of your ascent, and tongues
When you are my subject and the addressee

54. I make known to you a need I have concealed
From you, and there is no barrier between us

55. Apart from me, one seeks wealth preoccupied with it
And desires other than what I desire

56. You know best what I want
And are most knowledgeable about what I seek

57. How could it be hidden when your knowledge precedes
My heartfelt wish and your insight penetrates?

58. You continue informed of secrets, and you
Continue to observe me with penetrating stars
