1. The Lord protected him from all harm
Made easy for him praise and glory

2. And I ask for ease in seeing him
Through the Chosen Guide and his blessed Household

3. And afterwards, abundant longing
Flows from me to you, refreshing and renewing

4. I long for you with an old man's longing for youth
And the youth longs for the spirit of his prime

5. The impassioned lover, for his beloved
When called to the tryst, his passion flames

6. Especially when your letter came to me
Sweet in its folds, your words therein

7. As though it translated my own longings
And my youthful ardour and bonds

8. It told of a staunch, faithful heart
For a companion, nay a true friend

9. If he composes poetry one day or prose another
He casts therein many a pearl

10. With penetrating thought and guidance
And wisdom, knowing and critical

11. His words or deeds, both lead to glory
None can equal examples like them

12. God reward the composer and critic
Who added jewels to an abundant sea of merit

13. He brought, innovating a system
That dazzled thoughts and minds

14. His pens adorned writing
Refreshing souls and spirits

15. Shaking all who heard, in rapture
It was for me among the finest books

16. As though, in its beauty, giving it life
Fires in us longing for meeting him

17. The breeze blows through the margins of his words
His sermon’s axe splits rocks

So may God reward you best of rewards

19. Who praised the people of distinction with odes
So that what you said touched my heart

20. Like water when it alleviates the thirsty
Brought by messages carrying it

21. Pleasing the eminent Arabs
It is recited, gatherings quiver in rapture

22. All exclaiming in joy from it
Excellent, excellent! And you are most excellent

23. And everything from you is excellent
May God grant you, Most Generous of the generous

24. The Five, who are the People of the Cloak
The pure lineage, from the Virgin

25. Fragrant branches and roots
The masters, cave nobles, the first

26. In whom descended the verse of the Book
This while my mind remains worried

27. Thoughts and state confused
I have penned these lines

28. Apologizing for my inadequacy
Forgive your brother, he is excused

29. If his response came late
May you remain in safety and faith
