1. The bright-faced beauty was amazed when
She saw my endurance and composure towards her.

2. And that I do not incline towards a companion
Who gives me cups of wine.

3. Today I have extended a hand
With which I can attain what is above clamor.

4. Never a day have I inclined toward wantonness,
Nor a day have I shed a shred of my honor.

5. May you be bereft, I have no excuse for frivolity
When grey hair has appeared on my temples.

6. After this I will not mount,
Except a steed that is sure of foot.

7. So sleep, my critic, in security from me,
For you have not seen, after your blame, my excuse.

8. And say to the beauty, "You go your way and be aloof,"
And to the gazelles, "You take flight and flee."

9. I inclined long toward beauties,
But now I have turned away by my own will.

10. And my inclination had tempted me,
But look, now I am sober from intoxication.

11. I have wasted much time, but now I am settled,
When before, I would not settle down.

12. If I have wasted the days of my youth,
I have attained dignity.

13. And how can one occupied with seeking beauties,
Find time for one occupied with seeking glory?
