1. Your return, O Saad, renewed love's feast
While you still grieved in the abode of anguish

2. Thus you began slaying your eyelids there
As sacrificial camels are slain on the feast day

3. So it's the right of my eyes to shed these tears
And it's natural for my heart to feel this agony

4. For none but my heart invokes the horizons
Nor do any but my eyes overflow with tears

5. How could you stand on four [feet] after
They had wasted away at the hands of erosion?

6. Will you drive in them what you see?
How can you remedy anguish with anguish?

7. Why did you not heed sincere advice
And restrain your tears for what has passed?

8. Until you realized that passion
Returns the mighty to the weak of strength

9. And until you obeyed love and ardency
Which defies blame to obey desire

10. If after that you blame me again
You will get from me, O Saad, the worst reward

11. And I will censure you in overflowing tears
And find fault to cut you off from me

12. And say, "Stop complaining about slanderers
Since responding is up to the noble man."

13. Were you not the one blaming me before?
So what is this standing still and crying for?

14. I was just like you among the tall, proud ones
Debating with tears and the grayness of life

15. I would water the abodes with my eyelids’ water
My copious tears flowed and therein was richness

16. My lamentations in them did not cease
Moistening anguish and irrigating echo

17. And I recall in them my prime of youth
The time of trysts and the days of youth

18. I attained with them what I desired
But it has passed and faded away

19. I would flirt to attain union
And drink from the cup of pleasure andjoy

20. And I would hear from the melodies of the lutes
A speech that makes me fall passionately in love

21. That invites me to what delights the souls
And calls me to what is most desired

22. Words of sweet discourse would entertain me
Resembling in beauty the full moon of night

23. And I would spend time with them in a name
Like the face of a generous man and flower of meadows

24. So if after them you see me content
Even if in fantasy, it's not out of consent

25. But those are sighs that provoke
So remember, O Saad, what has passed

26. And if passion surges in the soul
Justify it by speaking of what is wished for

27. And make, by composing poetry, their mention
Into praise of Ali, the noble and lofty

28. For in praising him is that which dispels sorrows
And in thanking him, freshness overflows

29. After him, wishes have no end
And none but him ascends to the highest peak

30. He lowered himself while being dignified
Lofty in station, sublime in pedigree

31. In his traces forever one pursues
And by his words forever one is guided

32. A refuge for all who come near
And those from the two worlds who are far

33. He renewed the virtues of his forefathers
The chivalry of the devout and fate of the foes

34. Upon them descended the revelation of God
And through them shone dawn’s guidance

35. How can anyone but them take pride
When their grandfather is the Chosen One

36. Whoever fears the tribulations of nights
Seeks refuge in their company from harm’s way

37. Through them the fearful are protected
From calamities that should be feared

38. For them, when the field of men grows narrow
Are resolves unlike those of the white lions

39. Noble ones whose fires don’t hide in darkness
Nor do their neighbors in times of distress

40. They passed away, and after them came their branch
And those who passed are like those who came

41. Frightening when you see him
You'd think him among the black lions

42. He answers when the shriek calls him
A protector who responds when summoned

43. To whoever competes with him, he hands out
Nothing but the finest gifts from his own hands

44. I have hopes from him of grand ambitions
And aspirations beyond what's hoped for

45. And in my poetry praising him
I am like one who drank ease till joyful

46. He does not cease to return every feast
With the highest glory and loftiest construction
