1. Give it to me red, telling of pleasure
And let me drink it from the hands of gentle rapture

2. Seize the opportunity when it presents itself
So enjoy it and make it a gain

3. Steal the pleasure if it should pass away
My drinking companion, else you will regret it

4. Recall for me my lost youth
With an old man who never met decay

5. How excellent a bride's sister who is married
And the virgin of splendor from the water of the sky is gifted

6. She told of the fire of Chosroes what she narrated
Of the tempests of calamities what she presented

7. She was so gentle as if we never saw her
So we imagined existence as nonexistence

8. In gardens which took its adornments
And rain wept for it and smiled

9. A day of intimacy when clouds spread therein
In the regions of air, coolness arranged

10. It veiled the sun so we brought out for us
A traveling sun, and the orbiting moons

11. With a beauty whom perfection determined for him
To see injustice when it ruled

12. If a critic saw him criticizing me
In his love he would again fall in love

13. I complain of injustice but this is my unjust one
Oh my people, from a beloved how unjust

14. And he threw at me intentionally from his glance
What arrow was that glance wet

15. He did not fear God in my vitals and did not
Watch the sinner in what he sinned

16. He forbade union to his lover
Would that he permit what he had forbidden

17. Oh beautiful one, I obey him
And disobey in his blameworthy love

18. Of you I complain of what I suffer, and of
The sickness of your eyelids I complain of sickness

19. It is equal in you deprived of sanity
To confess the secrets of love or conceal them

20. Oh my people, what an advisor of my blood
From the blood of one slain by the glances of the gazelles

21. So much, so much in love, not in battle
The antelope fell, the most precious prey

22. And there are ways to passions which released
The tears of my patience from fervor, blood

23. I do not forget a night in which
The eyes of the sleepless from us slept

24. And we passed it as love desired
Partaking of the cup from the wine of rapture

25. Those were the weddings of time past
So hold a day of mourning for them

26. I have not ceased since them hoping for
Their return to soothe my pain

27. Juxtaposing my saying "perhaps" and "maybe"
"Maybe" will avail "perhaps" or "maybe"

28. Time will favor us once
And we will see the desired union organized

29. My eyes have never seen anything in what they saw
Like Abraham, righteous and blessed

30. Alawi, who ascended the highest ascension
And ascended above the All-Highest ascended

31. Since we saw him, we saw glorious
And knew him, we knew generosity

32. He is like rain, when the rain purposed
And like the sea, when the sea surged

33. Extending generosity from him ease
On the day of giving, the perpetual contended with him

34. The most noble of the world in mother and father
Then most faithful to them and most generous

35. He is from the noblest of people in lineage
The best of those you meet in them, blessed

36. Master, whether he takes pride or belongs
So to the best of prophets he belonged

37. Laudian, his opinions did not leave
From matters of opinion, anything ambiguous

38. By the pride in his supremacy I swear
Or do you seek above this an oath

39. He is unmatched among his peers
As glory and honor are inseparable twins

40. Walking as his forefathers walked
By his glories, the most upright path

41. His bounties spread what they possessed
For the system of praise until it was composed

42. I in my praise of him am his servant
For one who serves his ascension has served

43. And little, even if I were composer
Of his ascension in poetry of the stars

44. Praiseworthy traits in himself
So examine in him those traits

45. You will then see him for softness
Bestowed in every day blessings

46. He is an antidote from time which
Was in calamities a shelter and refuge

47. So if his days battle
The events of days, he makes peace

48. We avoid what we avoid of his might
And when affairs advanced, he held back

49. Not even have I reached a foothill, if I was not
Carrying to only him footsteps

50. But the Basra in his days
Saw with its eyes after blindness

51. God made for it in his shade
Better shade of it, but better refuge

52. Honoring whom came to him seeking refuge
Merciful to whoever came to him seeking mercy

53. So may God reward him on its behalf with the best
That one blessed is rewarded for what he blessed
