1. The dwellings became delicate and soft,
So restrain this mount here a little,

2. And let your tears flow, for it is but anguish
That sent streams of tears to you,

3. And cry over the ruins as much as you can,
Perhaps crying will relieve anguish from the heart,

4. And seek rain from clouds, as much as they allow,
If your eyes, O Hathim, are stingy,

5. O she-camel, why is it that whenever parting is mentioned
You draw out breaths of air that are frail,

6. Those whom I knew in their prime
Have become humbled seeds and loads,

7. Caravans of tears the day we bid them farewell
I detailed them for their departure in detail,

8. And it was as if the tears of dawn were clouds
Watering faces that faded and passed on,

9. O dwellings of loved ones, where are the loved ones
Who journeyed and left, their bellies full,

10. They left, and the garment of all departed ones left too
Drenched by their tears that flowed,

11. And their mounts went away carrying their belongings
Used to the white gleam of swords,

12. They appeared before us while tears raced
Each other, as love decreed the flow,

13. Woe to theglance of doe eyes that
Filled the hearts of lovers with agonies,

14. If not for the eyes, a man would not complain
Of wounds, nor blood shed,

15. O sister of Um Al-Khashf, how could you leave him
On a cloudy day, dispirited and confused,

16. You gave him the water of eyes generously
Yet denied him the pleasure of your sweet wine,

17. Why did you not send him imagination, so that
He may find rest in fantasy and imagining,

18. You blamed melancholy on me as a witness
And that is enough of a witness and judge,

19. And I know you are not ignorant
That keeping away leads to ignorance,

20. No beautiful one shone to one who blames
Except that the blamer became the blamed,

21. Blaming went astray, it did not guide where it erred
Rather, with its claims it led me further astray,

22. How can there be affinity after the tender branch
Has nearly withered and died?

23. I grieve for days of life passing
Turbid, taking wishes away,

24. And thoughts we have, pure Arab ones
Who accept none but the generous as husbands,

25. And if I get up to seek she whom I desire
In life, time seats me down incapacitated,

26. I will startle the she-camel and will not care
If I lose anguish or a companion,

27. And I will leave the generous, noble heights
That tempt the heartbroken and desolate plains,

28. Do not blame me, O Umayma, for the intention
To leave Iraq, which I am determined to do,

29. Of your people, if I hope in one
I find him attaining or attaining,

30. And the ambitions of men have diminished
And their fields of hopes have changed,

31. Manliness refuses to see me standing
In a position that debases the honorable and demeans,

32. Or that I accept humiliation and seek
Through honor - no dishonored lives an alternative,

33. Patience with this time, for it is
A time that sees merit in it as extra,

34. If not for the kindness of my father, kind one,
My eyes would not have seen kindness in it that is kind,

35. I send to him necklaces in my praise of him
That uncover the beauty of their chained pearls,

36. I imagine what melody would please him
Were it chiming in clamor and whinnying,

37. And he inclines with kind nature as if
His traits have drunk wine mixed perfectly,

38. He has an ambition so lofty it is as if
He seeks by it above the sky encampment,

39. If there were no signs of him on earth
It would nearly tilt with all its inhabitants to destruction,

40. How the Almighty has seen some of his tyranny
On a day shaking the world, awfully,

41. In a place he took as companion none but
Qina and Al-Musharrafiyyah, his friend and confidante,

42. The traits of clouds are his traits, when lightning flashed
Or his sword gleamed bared,

43. And if you come to the springs of his generosity
To attain some of his kindness,

44. You will find a guard there not allowing
Oh how few guards have acted!

45. And when he traveled generously on his money
Destiny worked by his command,

46. He has not ceased being good to the weak
Rather, he rushes to bestow gifts, hurried,

47. And if I asked for favors from Majid
You would attain only what you request,

48. And I have enticed you to kindness, so you have left me
As one who entices a groomed, docile camel,

49. By Allah, the way to wealth was not known
Until I found the way to your eminence,

50. And if I asked other than you, it is as if
I wanted your equal among people for myself,

51. I swear by your glory, greater than any oath
That employs magnification and veneration,

52. If you were among the nations, their habitats
You would be none but a prophet and messenger to them,

53. Indeed, He who gave you among His servants
A rank too majestic for any peer,

54. Gave you from the generosity of traits what made
You an indication of intelligence over daylight,

55. You have risen from those virtues as stars
That do not accept the setting of stars,

56. Hopes have clung to you, unlike any among creation
One day, and a hopeful attained what he hoped for,

57. And I hoped for what is hoped for by every expectant
And found your generosity sufficient to give,

58. And you have the white hand, wherever you extend it
You grant abundant, plentiful gifts,

59. And if I sought rain from a lasting cloud
It would not avail me over your comfort, not a bit,

60. It is a resource for those who hope, and a spring,
Let me succeed in kissing it with a kiss,

61. So I may strew upon you the pearls of my poems
And thank you morning and evening,

62. And in praising you in the likes of them
No words about you remain except those said,
