1. I treat a heart tormented in your passion
And long for you whenever the breeze blows

2. And I fold my wings of burning love
That blaze in the fires of my fervor

3. The censurers blame me for you, though I've not been
One to heed the prohibitions of blamers in love

4. You keep me awake at night Sa'd with a lightning
That flashes over shoulders like gilded lightning

5. A dove in the thickets sang, so it stirred me,
And made me weep, and delighted my hearing

6. It reminded me, while my home was far from it,
Of Sa'di and the rebec and Zainab

7. In the abode of love it is fruitful and refreshing
Our youth is withered and the days of revelry in our prime are gone

8. Coffee of generosity is passed around to us
So we drink the antidote to worries tried and true

9. And cups are offered to us brimming
With musk or aromas more fragrant and sweet

10. When the cupbearer brings them for drinking, they smile
With joy until their teeth show

11. Oh how many a night I spent with the moon
Telling the tale of longing that came to fruition

12. The breaths of the breeze toy and play
On the apple of the cheek like a well-aimed arrow

13. Do you not see how the days have changed for us
And the ease of living tossed and turned

14. So I cannot Sa'd, find pasture I'd graze
Or drink today finds sweet

15. By your Lords even if the land is barren for a moment
And even if lessons and rain have strengthened it

16. If the herd played on it and roamed freely
It was once to the herd a playground

17. Alas for the shade of the litters in the preserve
And alas for the district that became civilized

18. I obeyed passion whenever passion called me
And when I called patience, it refused that day

19. It did not cease displaying its sharp blade to the ignorant
So why did it show my heart its blade and not forestall?

20. I excuse myself with meeting while between us
Is sadness when my thoughts run to you

21. If the image of Malikeyyah visited me
I'd say, welcome, greetings, well met

22. If the slanderer conveyed calumny to Thumayyah
The slanderer did not speak truth but lied

23. The days blame me though the sin is theirs
For no crime I committed, and I was no sinner

24. Oh my soul, my life is wasted and I gained
No virtue, nor saw a polished lad

25. My fortune makes me sit instead of gaining
Glory, though I seek from fate a gain

26. My determination does not help me attain wishes
Nor can I scheme if the sword is drawn

27. And it does not stop dictating my tale
To time, filling the minds of men with wonder

28. And taking pride in the poems of Naqeeb
As it takes pride in its most beautiful flowers

29. Dazzling of bright forehead as if
When it shines in daylight it beams

30. A generous one, may God make him yet more generous
And nobler than the noblest you have seen

31. His lineage is pure in generosity, rooted
And the lineage of Hashimites remains pure

32. Let the masters of Saadat of Hashim's family
Name him as their finest mother, their noblest father

33. The most refined of them in torrents of generosity
The highest ranked among them in glory

34. A master came to us with virgin virtues
And was unique in what he brought and strange

35. Angering some and pleasing with his actions
Whoever gained what he gained was pleased and angered

36. He was given choice between creeds and chose
Only the creed of excellence as his creed

37. He won affection for virtues from all people
For winning hearts is part of benevolence

38. Through him God displayed his subtle mysteries
Though it had been secret in the unseen, veiled

39. God bless him whose fame the pottery carried
Spreading through the furthest lands and setting in the west

40. Whose guidance in generosity and dew
When sought, was the truest guide

41. All of fate revolved in your blessings
And I remain revolving in your blessings

42. I have not seen but you a hopeful
Nor one who freely gives if asked

43. When I cannot find a cause of wealth
I find you the cause of gained wealth

44. I sensed a flash from your clouds, watering
But never sensed from your clouds a barren flash

45. And I ask your gift thirsty
But do not see my matter from it sweeter

46. I have a pen that dictates to you when it flows
And conveys what is in my soul and expresses

47. O moon in the ascendant of Saad shining
O celestial orb in gifts celestial

48. The month of fasting came to me in procession
Of hardship the likes of which I've never seen

49. It troubled me when it arrived
And I saw no order in that for me

50. If only the month of fasting passed by my home
Smiling at what alarmed it and amazed

51. And saw a house, if good lodged an hour
It would shun its people and isolate

52. O how often it came when I was heedless
So I became fearful of it, on guard

53. I experienced it each year with torment
And one like me who tasted fates and tried them

54. When I saw worries conquer me
Until I saw the torrent reach the grove

55. And needs there wearied me
One like me, they wearied and wearied

56. A need carried me, if fulfilled
I'd be zealous in amassing wealth for it

57. I rode hopes with it though dangerous
When there was no riding beast but hopes

58. My good opinion of you before it was not dashed
You were never one to disappoint good thoughts
