1. Have you left my heart naught but torment,
Or reddened my eyes with aught but wakefulness?

2. You've gone far from my eyes and so they overflow
With my tears, while my heart cries out.

3. Then you left wakefulness in charge of them -
To prevent the eyes from sweet slumber.

4. Who will protect me from loved ones who spurn me,
As their estrangements press hard upon me?

5. They knew I was ill, yet none of them
Came to visit me - not one!

6. They went down to the valley of estrangement, so it seems
No tears will flow from me into that valley.

7. Their reproaches left me, when they turned away,
Alone amidst them, a lost wanderer.

8. Between tears shed over the dwellings, pausing,
And a cloak torn apart by separation.

9. And a heart startled each day
By memories of our days of joy and vigor.

10. O my companion! What of your pledge not to grieve?
Watered by the clouds in the direction of cisterns.

11. And I watered our home with a pouring rain,
Full of flashing light and thunder.

12. As if my sighs had kindled it
With their burning embers.

13. So the lightning seemed like polished swords
Unsheathed from their scabbards.

14. Honoring what they carried of water
As a gift for the barren home.

15. Shedding their burdens generously
Of all they possessed, upon hills and plains.

16. So you see the garden thanking them for their gift
Of flowers and greenery.

17. Succeeding upon the playgrounds of gazelles
Frolicking joyfully amidst the lions.

18. Whenever I paused before them
My eyes were the most generous of hosts.

19. And halting places for us where tears fell
Other than those the valleys shed.

20. For we have in them what burns
The hearts and livers of these noble steeds.

21. I had hoped for coolness from passion, but
No cooling can quench the heat of love.

22. Among the reproachers are dear friends
Who did not heed the ties of affection.

23. Where is the tryst with my beloved?
When shall we meet at the appointed time?

24. This estrangement has gone on too long What is this aloofness and distance from him?
I see no justice from fate, though it spites me,

25. In the face of my wishes, to favor enemies.
Yearning, in Abul Thana's praise, praise

26. Eternal in renown, enduring in song.
How often we sought him out with ode -

27. Yet no people succeeded like the archers.
And we found in him a sweetness of speech,

28. At which the envious were sorely vexed.
In a eloquence whose sharpness

29. Struck the heads of unbelief with firm smites.
So when his hands blackened a book

30. The brilliance of the Most High shone in that blackness.
And the clear morning light of truth shone

31. Out of the blackness of that ink.
Knowing the goals from their origins,

32. And the ends of all things, their consummations.
And when the Muslims sought his guidance,

33. He was the Imam to guide them.
Warning with verses from the path of error,

34. And guiding to the road of right guidance.
Heir to the knowledge of his grandfather, Master of Messengers,

35. And the secret of fathers passed on to sons.
He revived the nobility of great ancestors

36. And the glory of noble forebears.
Your eloquence prevails in every discourse,

37. Like the strikes of a sword on the day of battle.
These lands were blessed by his valor

38. And excellence - none like him in any land!
Gatherer of sciences, multiplying refinements,

39. Singular in merit, unique in oneness.
He attained what none other attained,

40. And picked fruits of hope beyond reach of gatherers.
Rhymes tell of his sublime traits,

41. Authentic narrations, strong in transmission.
How can we enumerate all you comprise?

42. Can stars be counted by astronomical calculations?
If we listed your virtues, O people,

43. We would fail, for numbers have no end.
O pillar of upright religion! Never

44. Ceasing to be magnificent in build, lofty in pillar.
You are God's sign for all people

45. And a mercy for worshipers.
In Baghdad, where you resided,

46. Is the praiseworthy station in Baghdad.
I have not ceased to hope for you in this life,

47. And hope for you in the next life thereafter.
I am, beyond all others, needless of creatures,

48. And have no need to hope in ascetics.
Favors have garlanded me from you, and your bounty

49. Is like necklaces upon noble steeds.
Acts of kindness from you have drowned me -

50. O generous ancestor, O glorious forefathers!
I have obtained all I desired

51. From your nobility, and attained every wish
From your open hand - and so

52. I have gained the reward of fasting and celebration.
Every feast has dawned upon you anew,

53. For it is a feast of the noblest feasts.
