Of glorious companions and friends

2. Who shunned the call of discord and split asunder
The fastened knots of obstinate discord

3. Each one a treasure trove of merit
With no fear of stinting when asked to give

4. What a club called out the noblest
Scholar of religion, ocean of knowledge, Iraq’s Grand Mufti

5. If his knowledge was unleashed on the land
It would deluge the two worlds with a flood

6. A proof against specious arguments, no heretic he
For a meteor must burn bright

7. Dispelling gloom whenever gloom descends
Relieving anxiety when suffocation looms near

8. To his grace flock the seekers
To his abode yearn the camel mares

9. He becomes people’s refuge in distress
The best of all without dispute

10. Consider whom this club brought together
Virtues of character in their ranks

11. They combine valor in contest with
Tenderness in jest like lovers

12. The hour that brought them together
Brought to me vistas of horizons

13. Turning it into a garden in first bloom
With partridges wandering drunk

14. As if the talk therein was wine
Brought to me in cupbearer’s palm

15. A gathering with no lack of joy
Devoid of envy and hypocrisy

16. What a gathering illuminated by Ahmed
Peaked in beauty with utmost brilliance

17. Joy permeated it from all around
With the era’s literatus Abdelbaqi

18. And Ali ascended to the sublime
With swords and steeds of pedigree

19. His worth rose to Ali's worth
And he rose high, foremost among the eminent

20. He collared people with his equal’s hands
Like necklaces around necks

21. How we thanked them when the delegates shared
Among them the Giver of Rizq's bounty

22. May God grant joy to the joyous among them
Whose talk was sweet and words so palatable

23. They graced this era with assembly
Let them not disperse hereafter
