1. Sorrows glistened in the cup,
And the straight, strong palm tree stood tall.

2. It urges pleasure for the regretful,
And commands conviviality for the boon companion.

3. Spring has laid out a carpet for us,
Of varied flowers.

4. The horizon is dusty at the edges,
And the face of the earth is green.

5. There, moons rise up,
Suns of breeze in the desolate night,

6. As if its specks were arranged into stars,
Pelting the devils of sorrow with them.

7. And it tilted for me its fresh sweet water,
Its pillows are healing for the sick.

8. And the sweetest thing I see in it is my torment,
So I do not complain of darkness and injustice.

9. And beloved friends, noble as I desire,
Who revel with me over the daughter of the vineyard,

10. And whom pleasures with the lute delight,
Which repeats the melody of the gentle voice.

11. It distinguishes my comrade with what is general,
Making him special and general.

12. So alas! Sorrowful passion disclosed
What was concealed in the silent heart.

13. And not a noble tear has flowed
From the agony of painful love.

14. I blame my passion, and I wonder—
For what can the blamer be blamed?

15. And tears fell from my eyes only
For the burning poisons in my heart.

16. Can one tormented by love's glance escape sighs?
And now farewell, and the patience to stay has ended,

17. Despite the permanent anguish.
Only for God, from the time we spent

18. In past pleasures.
And a comfort used to be offered me,

19. That would return the soul to the feeble body.
I took its cup and was delighted in it,

20. So ask me how you wish about bliss!
To the point that the shining sun caroused with me,

21. And the full moon was my boon companion.
Youth and companionship assaulted me,

22. And passion for the roaming gazelle assailed me.
The partridge's twittering and trilling,

23. For it, the darkness of night is radiant.
I walked with it quickly,

24. Smiting its cheek from it and the gentle wind.
When it passed through a land, it startled it,

25. Like storms passing over debris.
I stood at the ruins of dwellings,

26. But standing at ruins is futile.
I suppress my burning tears over it,

27. While beneath my ribs is the fire of hell.
I roam the lands and sigh over them,

28. And if good fortune ever helped the unfortunate,
It would dispel the bad days of misfortune.

29. My camels knelt in the courtyard of the family of Ali,
Not on the winding paths of cloudiness.

30. And the dew of Salman of the pure heart
Sufficed me over all the world.

31. Our mounts continued speedily
To the noble circle of the generous son of the generous.

32. I pastured fresh dew there plentifully,
So I do not approach the extensive pasture.

33. I kiss the palm of the fragrant Arwa,
Which directs the abundant rain.

34. And when sorrows befall me,
Through it I find salvation from sorrows.

35. And it protects those belonging to its family,
With the zealous protection of the sanctum.

36. When its virtues are mentioned in a gathering,
A fragrant musk exudes.

37. It appears radiant and appears elegant—
More subtle than a breeze when you look.

38. And the nobility and glory it displays
Signify the nobility of the lofty ones.

39. Its virtues have not ceased showing us
Faces of fortune in the star-crossed times.

40. And excellences that dazzle like flowers
Emerge from its noble deeds.

41. Why should he not ascend the stages of greatness
With what he is granted of solemnity and resolve?

42. Vanquishing the adversary with severe might
And attaining righteousness from the merciful.

43. For us, even if noses scorn,
It has the hand of Moses, the chosen one.

44. I gain from it what fulfills wealth for the destitute,
And thank it humbly.

45. One whose fortune is immense, whom
The hand of the Creator elevated over mighty creation.

46. In it is an impenetrability, in which
Misfortunes are prevented from attacking.

47. Its thoughts attain every meaning—
Refined, equitable thoughts.

48. It is the hero whom the nobles have prided themselves on,
The nobility of the lofty.

49. The thirsty throng around its springs,
And there is a sweet fountain for the confused.

50. And from the sources of its comfort
What has been desired flows from the lofty.

51. For Abdel Qader Al-Jilani it nurtures
The cosmic pole and the great tidings.

52. To one who relieved distresses in it
And saved the desperate from sorrows,

53. To the house of prophecy, their refuge,
The elevated pillars of pure lineage,

54. Guide of all worlds and their role model,
To the path of the Straight Way.

55. Gardens of beauty and gardens of virtue
Pouring with glories and knowledge.

56. And I do not know, if men go astray,
Are they men or mountains of resolve?

57. I composed verses in their praise with pearls of rhyme,
But they were not distinguished from the perfect pearl.
