1. The complaints and blame have ceased, while fate persists as a villain
And safe harbors have gone astray, unreachable even by a lifetime

2. By my life! Never would I yield to the whims of a complainer
Even if my heart cannot handle the pain of its wounds

3. May Allah give you a heart that cares little
For what can be avoided by patience

4. Gifts may pass without revealing my palms
And calamities come while I am unprepared out of despair

5. Wealth and poverty are equal to me
My contentment enriches me while hardship pains the impatient

6. I shun extravagance in life except for its basics
While among the people are those made arrogant by abundance

7. Excuses come abundantly to me
While minds are deceived by tricks

8. For every era I have a strategy
And the most wretched of all are those not steered by fate

9. I see none standing firmly in times of hardship
Drawing certainty from the perseverance of his patience

10. I am silent without actually keeping silent
I speak yet estrangement pays no heed to my words

11. I hesitate little before things that worry me
Thus, my path is not privileged by fate’s grace

12. I am needless of multitudes and company
Yet I am the one on whom pride is conferred

13. An ailment with no cure aches my heart
It pains me what no back can endure to carry

14. Justice has been denied me without suspicion
While towards justice I have no poverty or obligation

15. Oh how I wish to see someone other than a companion
Whose secrets scorch me while I make announcements

16. I envision nothing but sincere loyalty
Crying “betrayal” from its edges

17. When the misdeeds of a betrayer befall me
Estrangement is the least harmful thing my hands can inflict

18. The friend who pleases you in your absence with his words
Yet is not embarrassed by breaking a promise with you

19. But by my father! Never have I yielded to oppression
When my self has made clear to me white and black

20. I refused to be led by people on their rope
Such conduct deserves gratitude

21. Some men wish me to be partial to them
While little injustice benefits mankind

22. Those accustomed to inflexible principles
Bore of manners persisting for too long

23. That which negates arrogance in them
Is my certainty that arrogance is the flaw of the arrogant

24. I want not a life whose presence I resent
Otherwise travels would not seek the aid of travels

25. For he whose abode longevity inhabits
Excess and glory are to him but barrenness

26. I care not for a long lifetime or its fullness
For at demise, little and plenty equal

27. The world suffers from loving life, and what severe
Misfortune that the malady shows no sign of healing

28. I say to those who have ears that do not admit blame
And tongues whose branches bear no excuse:

29. “Bold when the struggle overwhelms his family
Full when hope fills his chest with certainty”

30. Of young men I love all who roam freely
Neither heeding command nor prohibition

31. Dragging the surplus of his good fortune
A heart not possessed by fear

32. Gaining support and guarding their softness
A protector when fate has made his condition difficult

33. Thriving on negligence, his work uncustomary to glory
His obedience for sale and his goal apathy

34. Eyes to the high with chronic weakness
And hands not known for victory

35. Whenever a sinner starts seeking his slaughter
Every side of him becomes a slaughter

36. I say to him while fear colors his complexion
And his breath pants from the strain:

37. “He will know who revives hope through suspicion
That my confrontation of his aspirations is but a grave”

38. I possess consciousness saving the steeds through recollection
Nor did remembering it overburden my thoughts

39. I will give exhaustion what the soul intended to fatigue
Neither bonding nor separation concerned me

40. When our feet tread the land of Iraq
Tell the skilled, for then is your wedding of Resurrection

41. I wore its wilderness and its hostile night
While dawn could barely reveal its glare

42. The darkness tilted to hide the east
Grasping but a fraction of its body

43. I say to my friends while destiny wanders
Scattered by worry and gathered by poetic meter

44. The hands of fate have turned from their necks
As it turned the hands of those drunk with wine from their cups

45. Eyes of darkness more compassionate to glory than you
Why then do they sleep while yours are numb?

46. I implore you by God not to resist moving
Due to the weakness of lions or the rising of the moon

47. And afflicted ruins whose dust shrouds the day
Stirred to turbulence by the winds and rain

48. We carried to it death and white blades and spears
With hands whose blood's violence was tumultuous

49. We ignited with it the fire of spears with some youths
Fiery brands concealing their blaze from burning embers

50. When taking revenge they hope not for pardon
And when forgiving they are not provoked by bitterness

51. They did not venture into impregnable strongholds
Where a land or sea could impede their advance

52. If you meet them thinly during any ambition
Know they are many during every misfortune

53. I blamed while the hearing of one indifferent turned away
My invitation was useless to the bewitched

54. Behind, I left no investigator of fate
To infer about me through its probing

55. Fortunes make me wait for their yields
While those claiming them through deceit gain prosperity

56. Oh, would that I had shortened the length of my trials
When no life compares to one of little experience

57. I bear witness that if the hand of wisdom stretched in the world
No lowly state for its people would be apparent

58. If I wished, money's splendor would flow into my hand
Wealth is useless without veiling its disgrace

59. Let money pass, each hoarder tasting its affluence
Your riches being the earnings of sublime deeds

60. Think not that I submit to its cravings, detached
For the cravings of greed become its captivity

61. Is glory not that you are seen craving nothing?
Your pursuits are debt not negated without wage

62. No good in provision extended through a hand
Or gift whose bestowal demands gratitude

63. I accept and do not accept attaining a goal
When oppression persists, agreement earns no praise

64. Can any ordained fate please people as such
When my worry cannot encompass the foreordained?

65. May Allah irrigate an era where I obey no necks
Blame and rebuke do not caution me

66. When a confused plan sticks to me peel off its disarray
As leather strips remove filth from the hands’ surface

67. Your fortune of what people frequently mention
Is harvest manifest in the course of their deeds

68. So little a thing, repelled by an era, granted by one
Perhaps an age will gift it while another denies it
