1. With your neighborliness, O people of Yathrib, my need
Is upon you, beyond all mankind, binding

2. And whenever I come visiting your land
Beware of slanderers, so bless my coming

3. How many among you for whom passion
Is a smiling glance and a tender nape

4. And perfect in beauty, at whom is drunk
The cup of love without mixture

5. What of one who stingily withholds the dew all his days
If one day he stingily withholds even thorns

6. And he acts jealously though it is he in whose hand lies
All I wish of my pride and my rapture

7. And he keeps me from his sweet water
So if he gives you drink, he gives you bitter and harsh

8. A connection like the gloom of darkness, wavering
And a separation that follows its path

9. Oh, may God kill the coquettes
Who by passion have trapped us, delicate and tender

10. They went on with the sincere man in passion
Until in it failed every remedy

11. O my two friends, beware
That you provoke the doe with thorns

12. Until the orbit of stars inclined
And dawn on the heel of dusk like a lamp

13. By Him who hosted us one evening
With the separation between us without discord

14. We contained in our hearts a band
Whose affection faded like preserved butter

15. They bade us farewell without knowing that
Which they deposited in us of burning coals and flames

16. And the traveling party between one who passion
Has poured into his heart or one despairing with wailing

17. Shedding tears from his eyes as though
He weeps for his loved ones from the thorns

18. And I who dwelt on the summit of Hashim
And donned the belts of Adnan in struggle

19. The ones who strike resolve on the day of battle
And pronounce judgment on the day of contention

20. And the ones who compete, aloof and remote
From the planets' orbit after nightfall

21. And the ones who drag to their enemies' abode
The hems of every complex entanglement

22. Like the sea how the swords and the sabers shine
In its depths instead of waves

23. Containing men who care not for devastation
Save what devastates on other than a day of rage

24. They discarded life and plunged their souls
Among the deaths - what plunge!

25. And they came upon the desolate plains
Full of headbands and arm bindings

26. The sands ate their flesh and the fangs
Of every giant sweated their limbs

27. So they came, however the valiant desired, lightly
Like firebrands, the jewels urged them on

28. A people whose defense is salvation to the fearful
And the palm of whose hands are generous even to the beggar

29. When men struggle they struggle not
Except for chastity from the wearer of a mighty crown

30. And when faces contend, wary of devastation
Their faces are the moons of every giant

31. And when you seek their peer, you find them
To have imprinted their mark with piercing

32. Indeed, I sought glory and found
Mu'add except I returned reversing my steps

33. And I found the camels' litters between us
In every fawn-like woman up to copulation

34. An infertile age whose mothers among the pregnant
Once pregnant, birth but wind eggs

35. How many pregnant among them with the burden of idiocy
Faltering in his speech, stammering nonsense

36. A monkey whose accidents drag his tongue
So if he feels secure, always controversy

37. Branded with vulture feathers but he has become
Wrapped among us in borrowed plumage

38. You see him satisfied with the paltriness of Sufayd
If he spends a night respected white beards

39. I said to the transgressor, honor among them
Is to throw aside what is intact and complete

40. What would you demand of one with a divider belly
Bare of pearls and offspring?

41. And you wish to gain the bounties of wealth
From the mine of destitution and closure?

42. And of foolishness, that one hopeful should think
Is the draft of quenching from a noxious bitter tree
