I am the courageous one, yet I grieve as you see,

إني الشجاع وقد جزعت كما ترى

1. I am the courageous one, yet I grieve as you see,
Since morning, for the death of the son of Courage.

١. إنّي الشّجاعُ وقد جزِعتُ كما ترى
منّي الغَداةَ بمصرع ابن شجاعِ

2. His tragedy has led me to confusion,
And thrown me into torment.

٢. ساقتْ مصيبتُهُ إلى بلابِلي
سَوْقاً وألقتني إلى أوجاعِ

3. My tears burn my eyes,
My sorrow consumes my soul like fire in my ribs.

٣. فالماءُ من عينَيَّ يقرح ناظري
طوعَ النّوى والنّارُ في أضلاعي

4. I wish this love could console me in my misery -
That the denier not say what he says.

٤. ووددتُ لو تُغنِي الوِدادَةُ في الرّدى
أنّ التكذّبَ ما يقولُ النّاعي

5. And of wonders, being stingy with him,
I buried him and threw him in a pit.

٥. ومن العجائب أنّني ضنّاً به
رَمّلتُهُ ورميتُهُ في قاعِ

6. It pains me to see him in the dust,
Decaying while my affairs with him were disobeyed.

٦. ويسوءني أنّي أراهُ في الثّرى
يَبْلى وأمري فيه غيرُ مُطاعِ

7. In a high-ground grave - but does it benefit the youth
If life was taken from him in the high-ground?

٧. بِيَفاعِ مشرفةٍ وهل يُغنِي الفتى
سُلِبَ الحياةَ مَقِيلُهُ بِيَفاعِ

8. In fertile soft soil - but it does not benefit a man
To be in a grave away from fertility and pasture.

٨. في مُمرِعٍ خَضْلٍ وما أغنى اِمرءاً
في اللَّحْدِ عن خِصْبٍ وعن إمراعِ

9. Be hard on me for your death taking you,
And deafen your hearing from the talk of the mourner.

٩. أَعزِزْ عليَّ بِأَنْ توفّاكَ الرّدى
وأصمَّ سمعك عن مقالِ النّاعي

10. I wanted to protect you in the tomb, but instead
I made you prey in the hands of destroyers,

١٠. وَأَردتُ حِفظَك في الضّرِيح وإنّما
صيّرتُ شِلْوَكَ في يَدَيْ مِضْيَاعِ

11. A voracious hyena who eats, not out of hunger,
Everyone given to her to eat by death, eaters of carrion.

١١. خَرْقاءُ تَأكل لا لجوعٍ كلَّ مَن
يُهدي إليها الموتُ أكلَ جِياعِ

12. Who do I have after losing you, a friend
To whom I can convey my concerns when I want?

١٢. مَنْ لِي ترى مِن بعد فقدِك صاحبٌ
أُلقِي إليه متى أردتُ بَعاعي

13. And who will elongate my enjoyment of wonders
By conversing, and who will shorten my farness?

١٣. ومَن المُطيلُ تمتُّعِي بغرائبٍ
مِنْ بَثِّهِ ومَن المقصِّرُ باعِي

14. And when the predetermined death comes to the youth,
I cannot save him - my defense is lost.

١٤. وإذا دنا الأجل المقدَّرُ للفتى
لم أُنْجِهِ منه وضاع دِفاعي

15. My swords - grief is fettered from him
And my spring for him is like an observed pasture.

١٥. وقواطعي وهي الحِداد كَلِيلَةٌ
عنهُ وَنَبْعي فيه مثلُ يَراعي

16. I am long of arm - so if death extends
A hand toward me, my arm falls short.

١٦. وأنا الطّويلُ يداً فإنْ مدّ الرّدى
نحوي يداً منه تَقَاصَرَ باعي

17. How life deceives us and we bend
By the guile of crafty deceivers!

١٧. كم ذا تغالِطُنا الحياةُ وننثنِى
منها بخدعةِ مائِنٍ خَدّاعِ

18. Where are those who ascended the peaks of loftiness
And settled in the best plains of glory?

١٨. أَينَ الّذين عَلَوْا على هامِ العُلا
وتبوّءُوا بالمجد خيرَ رباعِ

19. Those who spent what their tents contained
And gave away what the shepherd drives.

١٩. الباذلين لما حَوَتْهُ خِيامُهمْ
والواهبين لما يسوق الرّاعي

20. It rained your dust, O Hussein, with first rains
Pelting the abodes with a worrying downpour.

٢٠. فَسَقَتْ ترابَك يا حُسينُ بواكِرٌ
ترمي الدّيارَ بعارِضٍ همّاعِ

21. As if the flashing of its lightning were Indian
Swords unsheathed to strike the darkness.

٢١. وكأنّ لَمْعَ بروقِهِ هِنْدِيّةٌ
مسلولةٌ جُنْحَ الدُّجى لقِراعِ

22. As if the rumbling of its thunder amidst it
Were a cauldron boiling or the roar of beasts.

٢٢. وكأنّ زَمْجَرَةَ الرُّعودِ خلالَهُ
دوحٌ تقصّفَ أو زئيرُ سِباعِ

23. Your Lord's defense of you was better than His
Punishment of an evildoer, better than defense.

٢٣. ودفاعُ ربّك عنك شرَّ عقابهِ
عن سيّئٍ خيرٌ من الدّفَّاعِ
