1. I trusted in you until I was ashamed, and how many faults
Our trust brought upon the pure pages!

2. I did not fear before to reveal you,
But now I shy from exposing such disgraces.

3. You made me out to be a man with no favor to you,
Who was never inclined towards you in dispute.

4. And if reluctance drove you to the heights of glory,
You turned back with recoiling, like fleeing foxes.

5. The Hijaz was not wide enough for what you sought,
With enemies not ceasing to obstruct.

6. I brought you near, unasked, to the side of wealth,
While each of you wavered between refusal and acceptance.

7. Though his efforts bettered your days,
Why, amongst you, is his day not good?

8. I made you grasp glory, lofty glory,
While you are without an eye towards glory, aspiring.

9. I sharpened a sword with which I repel enemies,
Not thinking that it would wound me.

10. He who enticed you against me,
When I was a loyal friend, not withdrawing.

11. I am easygoing, openhanded with parting from you,
Never, for a moment, being stingy.

12. I changed when I saw you swerve, and did not help
Against your doubts with white amidst the dark stains.

13. And it brought out what mischief you concocted,
A passion for you that was among the innermost feelings.

14. When I drank affection from your poisoned cups,
I returned with a palm whose sale brings no profit.

15. Were it not for my weight in your balance one day of trial,
It would not be other than leaning, unequal.

16. Do not think I will remain to be hurt,
For I am wounded, frequently sighing.

17. When a friend hurts me one day and is cruel,
He becomes to me like a hostile assailant.

18. A love that was between me and you has been severed,
And fallen to the ground, one of the sand dunes.

19. I have no more cravings for your lands,
No more hopes for your gifts or dwellings.

20. I have no knowledge of the place of your settlement,
I was only between departing and returning.

21. If the open land is the place of your abode,
I have no path to those ruins.

22. I realized that if I stayed in your lands,
I would remain exposing barren deserts.

23. I was naive about you and had not yet tested you,
So testing you resulted in disgraces.

24. When we meet, our faces laugh,
Yet how many hearts beneath them sting!

25. You were once without blemish in the morning,
But now you are a wing without feathers at night.

26. Do not ask me for the loyalty I once knew from you,
For it has flown in the turmoil of rushing winds.

27. If you become entangled, after union and intimacy,
in some of the shameful, attacking calamities,

28. My heart is averted from you, unyielding,
And my tears for you are frozen, not pouring.

29. I do not complain of all the wrongs I faced from you;
A man's first duty is to hint subtly at reproach.

30. How different it would be if you were just to yourselves
And did not wrong what is between passionate and eulogizing!

31. The most foolish of people is he whose honor
is exposed to the vileness of some natures.
