1. Mistreatment and kindness

2. Breaking and then mending
Secrets and then revealing

3. O Time, how much
Increase and decrease!

4. Why do you betray those
You make a pact with?

5. You are connected to none,
Nor estranged from any.

6. You clothe the naked,
Quench the thirsty,

7. Disappoint those hopeful of you,
Humble the proud before you.

8. You enrich then confuse,
Or guide and then lose.

9. Gray hair passes unto death
Like youth in whatever way decreed.

10. No allies can help
Against death and its hosts.

11. No status, wealth, honor, or power
No lofty clan with towering glory

12. No mortal remains
Through days and time.

13. Where are our drank-mates
We caroused with in revels?

14. Bare of fancy raiment unfailing, unbowed
Were heads and all mankind bodies and bones.

15. In hardship their food was giving and hospitality
Their homelands were for kindness and grace

16. Kings have passed, even Khusraw
Was dispatched by events, Khagan.

17. Gone are our Edenite friends
Of Jurhum and Qahtan.

18. Off them fell with death
Crowns, diadems.

19. Retainers, favorites
Advisers and boon-companions.

20. Horses whose neighing
Stirred vales- their restive galloping!

21. Bay steeds from war's breeding grounds
Decked with quality accessories.

22. Swords that clashed in wars,
Scabbarded, sheathed.

23. False shining splendor
Trinkets with gems made to gleam.

24. Say, mansion-dweller, what use
Were your mansion and palace?

25. Sheathed at rest, what avails
A sheath to a sword?

26. Dimmed is virtuous repute
Like tarnished coin.

27. Lost are Ghudar's blessings
Where bliss and joy dwell.

28. Humbled now is he who once
Upon glory's summit stood haughty.

29. Behold, possessions for heirs
Are nothing but ruins.

30. Unseeing we roam; all humankind
In their abodes are blind.

31. Though called, where are ears and hearing
When benefits are mostly loss?

32. No safety though riding the quickest steeds.
No immortality, death wakes the living.

33. Where they dwelt, they're gone
While we now dwell in their homes.

34. Cares came while still a boy
Anxieties, a fledgling.

35. Mourning fills me, drawn
To griefs as to a bosom friend.

36. I'm crazed with loss of dear ones
Though not drunken with wine.

37. They were branches from the tribe
And comrades, branch-mates.

38. No use were kindred and brothers
Or intimates and good friends.

39. Go your way but in my heart for you
Are fires forever burning.

40. If you build, you're not like a people
Who in ruin perished, passed away.

41. If I'm diverted, I've naught
To divert me from thoughts of you.

42. Without you, my joy in bliss
Is loss.

43. No more joy for heart,
Nor rest for eyelid.

44. Rainclouds weeping
Drenched your grave in downpours.

45. Morning and night
It is blessed, thriving.

46. The breath of life still
Stirs it, and sweet herbs.

47. Forgiveness if you erred,
Blessing and good pleasure.

48. Among your folk you were
Faithful in creed.

49. Certain of faith when others doubted,
Surrendered when others refused.

50. You befriended ones who
On Judgment Day shall be favored.

51. Bestowing on the Lord
Grace when needed, kindness ever.

52. On the day mankind is resurrected,
Be among them wherever they are!
