1. Who is the doctor for my ailments and pains?
Or the friend to share my worries and goals?

2. I used to be steadfast, but fate’s twists and turns
Have made my steadfastness waver with woes

3. My friend, when fate sought to lessen me
And kept me from pleasures, no longer at ease

4. Ask my heart about all its flutterings
Within it lies whatever sickness you please

5. Though eloquent, the tongue cannot convey
The heartache that lingers between my ribs

6. When God waters the thirsty trees
He did not water my trees this year with rain

7. Nor cast down the valley's streams
Nor pour down upon fertile land

8. I stay put, though hating this place
Whose roads lack goodness or any grace

9. Amongst people with no manners or tact
Like a herd with no shepherd to keep it intact

10. They burden me with weights I cannot bear
And task me with deeds beyond what I can dare

11. Change your lands, if you find them disliked
Home for home, and stone fence for another alike

12. How long in this abode of woe and disdain
Devoid of any goodness or charm

13. Browbeaten by the people, a target to blame
Their sharp tongues like a piercing arm

14. Their speech cannot be defended or healed
By my skin though it thickens into a shield

15. Shall I bear injustice while the desert lies open?
My thigh-sinews quiver though swords remain sheathed

16. My hands could hold a long and balanced blade
Or grip the hilt of a sharp and slitting glaive

17. If I don’t hasten away from their valley of spite
No caller to battle could spur me to fight

18. For whom do I hide what stirs in my soul's keep?
When safety cannot guard what boils in its deep

19. If effort won’t save you from harm’s wretched abode
Then, alas – no effort can ease that grim load

20. They said: you settled for less than your share, I said:
Never think I freely chose to forbear

21. Misfortune assailed me night after night
Until I cheaply sold what was my right

22. Better a shack in rags than living low
In a mansion of humiliation and woe

23. If you live free, don’t debase yourself out of greed
Don’t dwell between hopes and desires and need

24. Don’t rejoice at gifts with belittling strings attached
That you harvest from hands forcing you to your knees

25. May God not sate those made heedless and numb
Who know not of lofty goals or their worth

26. Deluded by rays of fortune, blinking bright
Falling between loss and gain in their plight

27. To the Kaaba throngs now hurry and race
Praying their sins will be erased by God’s grace

28. I will rain over the horizon blows
To shed blood from all my foes

29. With each moan of a bereaved widow
Purity, and disaster foreshadowing woe

30. My star in the green sky drops down
Like a shooting star, colliding, renown

31. Tell my foes my patience with them has passed
Let them beware, my judgement comes fast

32. You never thanked me for the breeze that I blew
After me comes no breeze, only storms in its lieu

33. Far from life, I was a sheltering tree
Repelling harm and enmity

34. Blind to vice, deaf to their dispraises
My sights and senses no fault betrays

35. They took flight, and then my hands reached far
And seized what no hand reached before

36. I wish for one who is no friend or kinsman
Who cannot match my capacities, try as he can

37. If insulting him did not demean me
I'd toss him about, no shelter to flee

38. How long will you race me, oh Fate, and betray me
With stumbling, and seek to deceive me?

39. When good is asked of them, away they slink
Scavengers, if you look close, missing a link

40. I trust God with those torn from me by parting
Without my farewell or final blessing

41. If not for the anguish, I'd never have known
These disasters were coming, that fate had me shown

42. Without you, my eyes say, now oft sleepless at night
My people - where is my rest and respite?

43. O soul, either you lower proud heads
Or you are a crutch, lifted o'er steep rocky beds

44. Don’t blame in secret without an excuse
But do blame what clearly all good refuse

45. For man in his days is held captive
To ruin, between clasping walls and their straps

46. My eyes say, without him, now oft tearful at night
My people – where is my sweet sleep and respite?

47. O soul, you are either humbling the proud
Or a staff, atop mountains enshrouded
