And the plump become emaciated

6. No one who conspired and deceived
Could fool our watchful eyes except the rich

7. We thought well of you, but
Your flaws belied our hopes

8. We came to you but found no allies
We wavered but found no branches to hold

9. We saw nothing from you, though you had
All you desire, except disgrace

10. Evil deeds were never adorned
Except by the vile and corrupt

11. There was no impenetrable defense
No precious goods nor fine jewelry

12. When we hope for good traits, we find
Only those that inflame hearts and eyes

13. White faces - if asked for virtue, they are
But empty headed fools

14. May God not water a people whose dwellings
Echo our verses when we part from them

15. They disappoint most times, then when
They gain power after that, they wrong us

16. You see them fail every good
Yet succeed in evil alone

17. No promise from them, though they erred
By making false promises before

18. They have, until asked to help
Then they become bereft

19. We wish their meager gifts had never reached us
And they had deprived us instead

20. Would that my heart had not foolishly
Answered their call like a donkey

21. He who tastes their bitterness wishes
Death rather than their company

22. Show me one loyal friend from their ilk
After long years, and I'll be content

23. Soon I'll be solitary, so let me find
A companion to my loneliness

24. All who draw near are driven away
Unless resigned to death by them

25. Go where you please, you'll get no
Yearning or pining from us

26. No keeping pacts or mending bonds
No soothing foreheads that frowned

27. And if sadness makes our lids sleepless
Our lids will show no sleeplessness for you
