1. Do you not see the misery that has come
It has loaded my heart with the heaviest sorrow

2. I have been afflicted, and peace depends
On the decree of fate that I be tried

3. Wounded, with no one to dress my wounds
With his palm as a spear, or pull out the barbs

4. My marrow is drained by the palms of adversity
Holding me back before I can descend

5. And if I reflect on the time of adversity
I see a night darker than the darkest night

6. As if I were blind though I am not
Blinded by the matter that has left me wretched

7. Oh the misery of man in his life
Taken from him one by one

8. Distanced from his family though he did not dislike them
And exchanged the living for those passed on

9. Do you see amidst the abundance of his house
Until you see him in the barren wasteland

10. Say to those whose crops still stand
Your crops will inevitably be harvested

11. And say to those enraptured with their wealth
Bequeath to those who will take from the bequeathers

12. And say to those traversing the plains of adversity
Have you forgotten the one who trips up feet?

13. Fortune fattened you yet you did not fear it
Yet only those brought low have been fattened

14. If it treats a man well when he is arrogant
It is the one he will meet humbled

15. Or if it spares him from spending once
It is the one he will return to, stripped bare

16. So do not be fooled by its flash
However it may gleam on the horizons until it fades

17. Nor believe the habitual lies
Of one whose way is to refute words and nullify

18. And we all sip the draft of adversity
Either prolonged of stay or hastened

19. So why should one panic from a knock
If it does not strike, how can it be postponed?

20. It conveyed to my heart a piece of verse
It deserves to be fed to the dogs

21. I said “You have not done well, O youth
But oh time, you have not been beautiful or just

22. Oh time, how often you move between us
Those we had no desire to move

23. You take from us one by one
Nay, you take the best then the best

24. Just yesterday you ended a brother of his
So look upon your gift, how plentiful!

25. Yet you continue to destroy what you seized
Patience, so patience is the utmost of trials

26. They said “Be distracted today from the departed”
I said “Away! A heart cannot be distracted”

27. Do not blame the bereaved for their sorrow
For the best of you aide the bereaved

28. What young man left us perforce?
Dispatched from us before we dispatched

29. Neither frivolity nor fear of foolishness in solitude were in him
And whenever the dishonest conversed with that man of integrity, he would say no

30. Doubt did not befriend his doors
Nor was he alone in any misdeed, if alone

31. Oh absent one, were it not for adversity
It would not have been so long since I saw you

32. It has robed me in what has no alternative
And perhaps one robed will replace one who was robed

33. No downpour misses your grave
Nor does affliction if it pours down

34. While the side you reside in
Knows no lack of rain or fertility

35. And while barrenness persists in others
Its crevices caked and split

36. Go on to where a group has gone
Who had the highest ranks

37. And become as they have become, for you
Prepared them for a secure lodging

38. They will intercede for you if a slip
Occurred and if some stumbling took place

39. The eternal Garden is their hospitality
And the fires of Hell are not for the devoted

40. Their love and success in loving them
Has brought out those it brought out or admitted
