Whether highborn or commoner?

It's as if they never fulfilled my hopes.

5. Why do I rationalize my longing each day,
Counted from number to number in anguish?

6. Plenty tricks me while gaining me nothing -
Plenty is but the start of privation.

7. Cut your ties with the youth whom death's gusts
Swept away - I have cut my own ties.

8. How many a brother I've been stripped of by fate
My heart severed from him, no robe left.

9. I'd connected with him alive but when
Death's missives arrived, our bond died.

10. On the day his loss ambushed me, my composure
Was a downpour - my patience, aloft.

11. I discarded him in a sealed crevice
Safe from the winds' pour and direction.

12. When he left in my cheer's gallop
He came to me swiftly in imagination's ride.

13. How long in vain passion's captivity,
Bewitched by each impossibility?

14. I have but ache for it, and my echo returned;
Others' length exceeded mine by miles.

15. With despised miserable creatures,
Bent - but desire makes me blind.

16. Or have you not seen - and you have seen gatherings -
Who settled however they proposed, lofty.

17. They scratched the sky with their claws, and dragged
Their trains across the horizons.

18. They circled sublime, magnificent glory,
Yet death cast them from the mountains.

19. Every arid-faced, fire-branded wretch,
Far-reaching, roaming ruler -

20. Spear of each disaster, answerer of
Every mighty calling -

21. Attackers whose attack brought woe,
As today teems with spears and blades.

22. When asked for bounty, they already gave it
Before questions could make appeals.

23. They rose on the horizon of plenty in an hour
No new moon could rise within.

24. You blame me for worries - take today
Whatever you wish of my belongings.

25. I was once heavy, but loss of you
Has burdened me beyond burdens.

26. Would I'd never taken you as a friend,
That affection shattered our treaty!

27. You left me, torn from my hand perforce,
Parting never crossed my mind.

28. Who ordained our circle's scattering,
Cast our assembly with filth?

29. If the ignorant ask of your virtues,
I won't hide them - I've no qualms.

30. Or haven't their parting saddened you? I'm still
Filled with agonies since you left.

31. If you draw near me in friendship and blood,
You are most lawful in my heart.

32. I value your nearness in spirit over lineage
For deeds, not names, merit praise.

33. Leave comparing lineages - it brings no
Benefit fitting our states.

34. No harm if my comrade differs
In makeup and composition from mine.

35. When a friend's actions I can't condone
It's enough that my words correct him.

36. May God water the ditch you occupy
With whatever pleasures or rain you wish,

37. And may every kind tear of agony
Visit you, brimming with flashes and hail,

38. When one passes others take its place,
Lest that haste bring harm.

39. If you turn to the gardens, in truth
Parting is the pinnacle of return.

40. You'll find in God's grace and pardon
More than you seek without effort.

41. When you're spared evil on a day
Reward is due - you stand tall.
