1. Oh heart, avoid what it cannot bear
And say to it, when it strays, where is its path?

2. Yearning and anguish are but its dawn
Worry and sorrow are but its darkness

3. If you two do not make it happy with a tear
Then do not deny it if it flows with tears

4. Death folded my family, after days of bliss
And after they left, none of their friends remained

5. So sorrow upon sorrow and abasement leads it
To a burning liver, piercing it

6. Man is prone to misfortune
So at times it's his son, at others his brother

7. Time is but joy after joy
Be it good or evil from it

8. There came to me from fate what wounds my senses
And how many misfortunes have come that I do not like

9. And they said the glory of faith has gone astray
And fallen in the midst of a rugged valley

10. So it kindled a fear whose flames cannot be hidden
And caused intoxication from which its mind cannot awaken

11. That is a going from which there is no return
And a sunset after which there is no dawn

12. As if after parting from it, I inherited a barren land
Whose burden its kinsmen carried

13. Unless it is two cisterns in the middle of a desert
With no water but mirage that cannot quench thirst

14. For what flows from the eye is not its water
Rather, it is the water of life that flows out

15. Who can ascend the throne's mattress
And rise high in rank and status?

16. Who can have pearls from the Indian sea scattered around him
With the blood of heads flowing in battle and its horror?

17. Who leads the noble steeds to the race-track
As if their galloping were brides coming out of their rooms

18. Who willingly bears a heavy burden
When the weak cannot carry a light load?

19. Who climbs the kingdom’s strongholds
Whenever a gap is breached or an elevation appears?

20. He whose hearing was the clanging of swords
And the prime of withering flowers was his drink

21. None suited him but the Most High
Who guides us though far and near

22. The angels knew you were their pride
Else say who cannot you surpass?

23. If they descend to lofty glories
Yours is higher than the glories’ pillar

24. You were of a people whose might sufficed for glory
And their market thrived with the greatest affair

25. When a generous one among them heads to munificence
He goes unhindered by what impedes him

26. Through them flow the streams of kingship
And with them are its branches and veins

27. Even if feet withdraw in cowardice, they have only
Glory to spur them on and urge them

28. God has decreed grief and sorrow for me after you
And what He ordains cannot be reversed

29. I did not fear you'd spend the night, while between us
Was the distant span of the lofty tomb

30. While I live on and you are laden
With heavy earth that you cannot bear

31. Men awaken from the wine they drank
While your intoxication with misguidance has no awakening

32. Why don't I protect you one day, when for so long
You protected me from weakness' disgrace?

33. When worries befell me, a brother twisted
To illuminate its darkness

34. To subdue the defiant and make straits wider
If you go, seasons go, and if you're absent

35. One elegant in manner has long been absent from us
If you hide from us today, a branch is tempted

36. And after a time, its leaves fall
So my heart has no delight after your day

37. Nor does anything my heart desires allure it
No thoughts excite my mind

38. Nor does my eye taste days I enjoy
Peace on a grave whose soil you inhabited

39. And whose gentle breeze blows upon it
Around it, gardens of bliss are spread

40. Filled with the purest musk
If earth was too narrow to hold him after loss

41. A soil has expanded that cannot constrain him
We passed by his grave, eyes raining tears

42. While yearning leads the way
From the lack of equity, my life after him

43. And in my palm, if I wanted, to join him
