1. Do not approach mischief,
for mischiefs are disgraceful.
١. لا تَقْربنَّ عَضِيهَةً
إنّ العضائِه مُخزياتُ
2. And make your righteousness eternal,
for the righteous are the everlasting.
٢. وَاِجعَلْ صلاحَكَ سَرْمَداً
فالصّالحاتُ الباقياتُ
3. In this world, to us
there are lessons forever.
٣. في هَذه الدّنيا ومَنْ
فيها لنا أبداً عِظاتُ
4. Either favours coming,
or favours departing.
٤. إمّا صروفٌ مقبلا
تٌ أو صروفٌ مُدبِراتُ
5. And the events of days amongst us
are taking and giving.
٥. وحوادثُ الأيّام فينا
آخذاتٌ مُعطِياتُ
6. And humiliation is death for the youth,
and honour is life in this world.
٦. والذُلُّ موتٌ للفتى
والعزُّ في الدُّنيا الحياةُ
7. And provision in both abodes is only
obedience or glorious traces.
٧. والذُّخْرُ في الدّارين إم
ما طاعةٌ أو مَأْثُراتُ
8. O loss for the man misguided
by those inviting him to ruin.
٨. يا ضيعةً للمرءِ تد
عوهُ إلى الهُلْكِ الدُّعاةُ
9. They delude him until he becomes friendly
with their alluring slopes.
٩. تغترُّهُ حتّى يزو
رَ شِعابَهنَّ الطيّباتُ
10. Lessons pass but to them
we have no discerning eyes.
١٠. عِبَرٌ تَمرُّ وما لها
مِنّا عيونٌ مُبصراتُ
11. Where are those forebears, with what
hands they acquired, then died?
١١. أين الأُلى كانوا بأي
دينا حصولاً ثمّ ماتوا
12. Of all who reaped
the fruits of Tigris and Euphrates,
١٢. مِن كلّ مَنْ كانت له
ثمراتُ دجلةَ والفُراتُ
13. it is said they attained what they craved
until it was said they passed away.
١٣. ما قيلَ نالوا فوقَ ما
يَهوون حتّى قيل فاتوا
14. Their bath-attendants did not avail them
when the (angel of) death came to them.
١٤. لم يُغنِ عنهمْ حين هم
مَ بهمْ حِمامُهُمُ الحُماةُ
15. Nay! Neither white nor red,
bare, wide open.
١٥. كَلّا ولا بيضٌ وسُم
رٌ عارياتٌ مُشرَعاتُ
16. They spoke for a while, but for their speech
there remains nothing but silence.
١٦. نَطَقوا زماناً ثمّ لي
سَ لنُطقِهِمْ إلّا الصَّماتُ
17. As if by their graves
they slept, but in them there is no sleep.
١٧. وَكأنّهُمْ بِقُبورِهمْ
سَبَتوا وما بهِمُ سُباتُ
18. After mounting couches
and rolling on mattresses, they are motes.
١٨. من بَعد أنْ ركبوا قَرا
سُرُرٍ وجُردٍ هُمْ رُفاتُ
19. They bid farewell to the virtuous women
and gazelles when they perished.
١٩. سلموا عَلى صلحِ الأسن
نَة والظُّبا لمّا اِستماتوا
20. And escaped from the haze when
it was said they had no deliverance.
٢٠. ونَجَوْا من الغمّاءِ لم
ما قيلَ ليس لهمْ نجاةُ
21. In a stance in which are
horror, perplexity, and agonies.
٢١. في موقفٍ فيه الصوا
رمُ والذّوابلُ والكُماةُ
22. And their days from where
they feared not their appointed time.
٢٢. وأَنامَهُمْ مِن حيثُ لَم
يخشوا لحَيْنِهُمُ المماتُ
23. And the earth covered them
with gloomy graves.
٢٣. وطَوَتْهُمُ طيَّ البرو
دِ لهمْ قبورٌ مُظلماتُ
24. So they are in them like feeble ones
ravaged by storms.
٢٤. فهُمُ بها مثلُ الهشي
مِ تعيثُ فيه العاصفاتُ
25. Dishevelled, their pillows therein
without hospitality, bare.
٢٥. شُعْثٌ وَسائِدهُمْ بها
من غير تكرمةٍ علاةُ
26. Say to those whose inclinations to
this world are attentive.
٢٦. قلْ للّذين لهمْ إلى ال
دُنيا دواعٍ مُسمعاتُ
27. As if they never heard
what the wailers say.
٢٧. وكأنّهمْ لم يسمعوا
ماذا تقولُ النّاعياتُ
28. Or what the abodes say to them
when they inhabit the desolate dwellings.
٢٨. أو ما تقولُ لهمْ إذا اِج
تازوا الدّيارُ الخالياتُ
29. So the laughing ones, who rejoiced with them,
are the crying ones.
٢٩. فالضّاحكاتُ وقد نعم
نَ بهنَّ هنّ الباكياتُ
30. Until when and until when
do your eyes sleep O seniors?
٣٠. حتّى متى وإلى متى
تأوي عيونَكُمُ السِّناتُ
31. How much longer will you deviate
from the eternal admonitions?
٣١. كم ذا تعرّجُ عنكُمُ
أبدَ الزّمانِ الموعظاتُ
32. How much have you been admonished, if only
you had compliant hearts!
٣٢. كَم ذا وُعظتمْ لَو تكو
نُ لَكمْ قلوبٌ مصغياتُ
33. You have averse minds,
or heedless eyes.
٣٣. لكُمُ عقولٌ معرضا
تٌ أَو عيونٌ عاشياتُ
34. Wonder at the abodes, and call upon them:
where are the firm mountains?
٣٤. عُجْ بالدّيار فنادِها
أين الجبالُ الرّاسياتُ
35. Where are the generous ones
to the slender waisted and the abstainers?
٣٥. أين العطاةُ على المكا
رِمِ للعواذِلُ والأُباةُ
36. Death runs in their veins altogether
while prayers run.
٣٦. تجرِي المنايا مِنْ روا
جِبِهِمْ جميعاً والصّلاتُ
37. And if they met, on the day of calamity,
their peers, it would be solace.
٣٧. وإذا لَقُوا يومَ الوغى
أقرانَهُمْ كانتْ هَناةُ
38. And time is subdued by their right hand
while they rule the world.
٣٨. والدّهرُ طوعَ يمينِهِمْ
وهُمُ على الدّنيا الوُلاةُ
39. It gave them generously
then took back saying: hand them over!
٣٩. أَعطاهُمُ متبرّعاً
ثمَّ اِستردَّ فقالَ هاتوا
40. They were all together, then
He dispersed their unity into fragments.
٤٠. كانَتْ جَميعاً ثمّ مز
زقَ شملَ بينِهمُ الشّتاتُ
41. So their hands after being granted bounties
became destitute and withered.
٤١. فأكفُّهمْ من بعد أنْ
سُلِبوا المواهبَ مقفِراتُ
42. And their swords and spears
were discarded and rusted.
٤٢. وسيوفُهُمْ ورماحُهمْ
منبوذةٌ والضّامراتُ
43. They felt secure in the morn, and they had
no knowledge of what death reaps.
٤٣. أمِنوا الصباحَ وما لهمْ
عِلْمٌ بما يجْنِي المماتُ
44. And He afflicted them
with a disease which healers cannot cure.
٤٤. ورماهُمُ فأصابهمْ
داءٌ تعزّ له الرُّقاةُ
45. And the arrows of the Bender's
accurate, poisoning arrows.
٤٥. وَسِهامُ أَقواس المنو
نِ الصائباتُ المصُمياتُ
46. The dew disappeared from between us
with their deaths, and the bounties.
٤٦. مات النّدى من بيننا
بمماتِهمْ والمَكرُماتُ
