1. The Lord shall not tend to him who lends an ear
To the words of every slanderous backbiter.

2. Each day he is transgressive and harsh
Toward him who has never been so.

3. And when grief disturbs my soul
I find rest in being preoccupied.

4. I have obeyed you, but not
Obeyed the talebearer as informer.

5. I am one of you - one with whom after
Much time you made a pact in difficulty.

6. God forbid that I should retaliate
With tyranny against the tyrant.

7. You will not see me, though you be stung
By evil, retaliate likewise.

8. And my reproach is most eloquent
In forgiving him who has committed wrong.
