1. Alas! What heart in the hands of foes,
Is justified loving falsely?

2. Moaning in complaint to one who settled,
Or yearning to one who left?

3. And sacrifices itself slain at the abodes,
Passionately and no blood spilt,

4. And how can I benefit if I concealed
With speech of love from the wooer?

5. And I have eloquent tongues witnessing it
With tears and emaciated body.

6. And were it not for love subduing hope
I would have no wisdom among people.

7. And lies came to me while all eyes
Were busy sleeping and preoccupied.

8. And how much stands between us formidable,
And imagined there is no obstructer.

9. And were it not for the sweetness of his presence
There would be no purpose in the apparition.

10. And there is no harm if death misses me
And benefit has touched me for now.

11. And there is no denial of truth if I do not attain it
If my benefit comes from falsehood.

12. I say to riders on easy on the run
Wolves of wrath unleashed:

13. Travel has worn out their bodies
Where are the riders, stillness is best.

14. Whatever matured fruitful you want
Or tight constraint you want.

15. Come, be just with me in those wishes
To the lodging of the unique just one.

16. Letting others say unlike the doer
And deviate from the speaking doer.

17. To one who never once
Had armor polished by a polishing hand.

18. A young man who wields the sword on days of defiance
And leaves cowardice to the archers.

19. And he was never a day touched
By folly in seriousness or jest.

20. So Allah bless you - of surplus
Giving beyond the hopeful's hope.

21. And joining the coward and the valiant
In merit when the generous is stingy.

22. And a day when destiny gives its assemblers
Without exemption or delay.

23. You witnessed and were in place of the watchman
With the spear in the worker's place.

24. And I love perfection in you
For I never saw one complete before you.

25. And I grieve over a time that passed me
With none like you to support me.

26. I am amidst a people
With no place among them inhabited.

27. So spread my poetry without a composer
And spread my saying without a sayer.

28. My adornment is my speech though they eradicated it
Throughout time from them in futility.

29. And were it not for your position
Kings would be without pillar or shoulder.

30. No driver away of harm they apprehended
Nor lifter for them carrying.

31. And how much you established their kingdom
When it was in the grip of one usurping.

32. So it stood on firm footing
When it was tilting and leaning.

33. And they tested you with what they tested
The morning of purpose in the hand of the hero.

34. And they reckoned you ignorantly like those they entrust
While many gallant were deluded by the ignorant.

35. And when you rose and they were unaware
One heedless awoke them from heavy slumber,

36. The stubborn yielded to you after defiance
And the truth from falsehood was clear to us.

37. You shook Khurasan
With no pillar for you collapsing.

38. And they marched to you like charging lions
So they fled with scattered cattle.

39. And many of them became like the few
With your supporters like the abandoners.

40. You made us hear the wailing of resolutions
Upon the people or the whimpering of one recoiling.

41. You satiated from them the thirst of swords
And watered from them the echo of those wasting away.

42. And when they saw the neighing of the steeds
Every young man boldly assailing them.

43. Every sword and spear cast at them
Despite them the hand of the caster.

44. You did not see but a slain corpse
Trampled by horses or a killer.

45. And they retreated, their horsemen in death
By the edge of your swords like infantry.

46. And they thought you reneged when they called you
While you are far from the trait of one failing.

47. And courage is not violating the veil with a stab
Or the blow of a receivable.

48. Rather it is enduring harm
And resolve in the formidable stance.

49. So do not blame the people for their longing
For your pouring rain unleashing.

50. Why shouldn't one yearn for the fertilizers
Who was in the barren, desolate land?

51. For if you were absent from Babylon
Your memory did not absent from Babylon.

52. And your arrival amongst men
Is like your praise in the bustling assembly.

53. You still keep us waiting for the meeting
For resolve - a year to another.

54. And whoever's postponement of the meeting
Is an interest - he is no procrastinator.

55. So say to my people I hold fast
To the saddlebow of the pouncing lion.

56. No startler can ever startle me
Nor can any frightener frighten me.

57. And none has glory like my glory
Not Ka'b bin Wail's progeny.

58. How can I fear and you are the guard
Of my abode and merchandise from marauders?

59. Come, love me with lasting sincerity
For that suffices me from attainer.

60. And you have already won all acceptance from me
And I hope you are responding to me.

61. I am pleased that you were knowing of me
While all the world is ignorant of me.

62. And I do not care about their aloofness
If you alone are loyal to me.

63. And when I made you a refuge for me
The world called me best of the loyal.

64. So I leaned my back on withering
And rested my burden on decaying.

65. I will remain though my lands are barren
Upon the outstanding man.

66. And I am not of the tall in pride
Boasting among people in the assembly.

67. Nor of those who censure and prevent
Shaking me ever with the scooper.

68. And the young man is not one who walked away
From the filth of honor by the washer.

69. Take it and after it the like of it
So how you awaken the heedless!

70. Words making the speakers depart
Coming forgivingly from the sayer.

71. And I was not before praising you
But a moth without fluttering.

72. So grant me what is past of stumbling
You still overlook the erring.

73. And in poetry either the genius's indifference
Or the fraud of the pretentious.

74. Not everyone whose palm knocks
Its doors is one entering.

75. So your star remains the star of felicity
Not the hidden nor the setting.

76. And you remained covered in glory
Without departing with the departing.
