16. If this life were fair to the striving one
I would attain from it the horizons of prosperity

17. Do not expect a time whose succession
Is between the black serpent and the yellow one

18. It gives its sons a living not out of joy
And disables them from it without cause

19. So when you see one dragging his train
Call him, “O owner of shrouds”

20. I have patience that brings back his saliva
Into his chest, and his vomit into his eyelids

21. And for so long I have made him drink the cup of sorrow
And clinked it with the molars of bitterness

22. Go on, my time, however you wish, for you will never see
The form of disgrace seeking refuge in me

23. Not everyone who meets you sells you his reason
And to sell it is the greatest of losses

24. I have cast off happiness for an empty one
Filled with my resolve and pride

25. The flock of happiness did not stop me, but rather
The greatness of souls is the youth of sorrows

26. And purified from all that the world contains
I let my reliance on it loose

27. When it clothed me in a garment of its love
I forgot the loss of my beloved spring times

28. I continue searching the world for his like
Until I found the one I say is enough for me

29. The eyes of every supreme one coveted him
Had it not been for him, they would not look upon a human

30. Had he wished, he would not have missed the furthest rank
That people seek with their eyelids

31. But he saw the kingdoms as beneath him
So he triumphed over the sultan from a sultan

32. He surpassed the generous predecessors in nobility
And precedence is for benevolence, not eras
