1. Let wealth be for its sons,
If you want never to be humbled.
١. دع الغِنى لبنيهِ
إِنْ شئتَ أنْ لا تذلّا
2. How much does one cling to a shadow
Fading and withering?
٢. كم ذا تعلّقُ ظِلّاً
مزايلاً مُضْمَحلّا
3. If you turn away from it,
It humbles itself to you.
٣. إنْ أنتَ أعرضتَ عنه
جثا إليك وحلّا
4. And if one day you seem eager for it,
It turns away.
٤. وإنْ رآك حريصاً
عليه يوماً تولّى
5. Whoever frees himself of greed's shackles
Has only freed himself of shackles.
٥. مَنْ فكّ رِبقةَ حِرْصٍ
فإنّما فكّ غُلّا
6. Whoever makes little of gifts
Was the proudest and most glorious.
٦. ومَنْ يجلّ صنيعاً
كان الأعزّ الأجلّا
7. Whoever carries a heavy burden
Of men's affairs becomes weary.
٧. مَن ملَّ حَمْلَ ثقيلٍ
من الرّجالِ أُمِلّا
8. And whoever mixes much with people
Is humbled and becomes little.
٨. ومن تكثّر يوماً
بالنّاسِ ذلَّ وقلّا
9. Seek no cure
For an illness that proved fatal.
٩. لا تطلبنَّ دواءً
للدّاءِ كان المُعِلّا
10. And earn no illicit livelihood
To live by.
١٠. وَلا تبعْ بحرامٍ
من المعيشةِ حِلّا
11. Allah has a daring call
For one who sees humbleness as disgrace
١١. للَّهِ نَدْبٌ جريءُ
رأى الغبينةَ ذُلّا
12. And counts what is in his hands
A burden and shackle upon him.
١٢. وعَدَّ ما في يديهِ
ثِقْلاً عليه وكَلّا
13. And one who extracts himself
From the coarseness of men is extracted safely.
١٣. وَاِستلّ بين رجالٍ
من العَضِيهةِ سَلّا
14. Life is but a lightning flash
Or a guest who briefly alights.
١٤. ما العيشُ إلّا كبرقٍ
أو عارضٍ يتجلّى
