1. The bereaved are silent in grief and resigned,
When they saw consolation is forbidden,

2. They blamed though many an exulter with blame,
Is with critics of blame most blameful,

3. Reproachers did not neglect the offender of propriety,
Whose embers of censure flare up,

4. Had they been equitable they would have excused me,
And I refused their advice for I am enamoured,

5. How you live in comfort while I suffer,
Or you are safe from censure while I am muzzled,

6. In my heart is the burning anguish of calamity,
You know naught of it though my heart knows best,

7. I am not equal to you, and no disgrace,
Ever blemishes your merits, O untainted virtuous folk,

8. My penis, its glans weeping from the long split,
Runs with blood,

9. O you men who attack with hand of havoc,
Exhausted, so it was said: That is destined and decreed,

10. And the calamity of Layla, and I courted her,
The night of burning in it and my day of blaze,

11. She mounted the saddled camel, impossible to deter,
And in the tribe occurred what cannot be contained,

12. I was halved and shared while you,
Remain whole, never to be divided,

13. So if I sneeze my nose is docked,
And if I assault an aid for me is amputated,

14. And if I look there is none, after she from whom,
I turned away, save the dark gloom,

15. Such is time, its benefaction passed,
Departed, postponed, havoc done and advanced,

16. Fulfilling hopes then frustrating,
Dragging the train of wealth then impoverishing,

17. Do not wonder at a critic disparaged and censured,
The wondrous is the corrected and the endorsed,

18. Say to him who builds as if he has not known,
That his building will inevitably crumble,

19. Gently! What is the world, however long for us,
If not like the shadow of a passing cloud fraying away,

20. What is our share in it, however much it increased our prosperity,
If not a drink or a meal,

21. Show me its purity without disturbance,
And delight without flies swarming over it,

22. Or pleasure obtained but not ever suffused,
With toil and exertion,

23. Ride with the steed to the old encampment and call it,
Where are they who alighted, after a long stay they departed,

24. Like a ferocious lion, who when he clenches the prey,
He shakes it violently,

25. Ever wakeful, seizing the utensils if the folk are inattentive,
And asleep when they are attentive and alert,

26. Veiled from vulgarity as if they never knew,
Aside from good repute when they learned of it,

27. Well-mannered, how often the diverse multitudes,
Miss the well-mannered and balanced man,

28. You see them frowning at havoc,
And if they see the paths of villainy they refrain,

29. Witnessing today while vigorous and overwhelming,
Vanquishing the army while formidable and countless,

30. Splitting the skull on the day of battle,
One is crowned while the other skulls,

31. Stabbing with spears that shred every brain,
As deep as an old male camel's cleft,

32. The horses are dyed with gore so their flames,
Are ruddy while the flowers are darker,

33. They were land patrols but after havoc tore them away,
They became clods of earth and great corpses,

34. They dwelled the land while their abodes,
Became for them, though built with their bones, narrow,

35. O lady of the inviolable home who spurns,
That any reprehensible person should enter it,

36. Chastity nested in it, and honour wed it,
Generosity, like the life of time, flawless,

37. Neither in the morn nor evening,
Is it rough save keeping fast or praying devotionally,

38. And they are lying down as if their good deeds,
Were those bright stars throughout their night,

39. Why do I see you, when you were intensely shy,
Never meeting nor speaking,

40. Between me and you lies a vast expanse,
Or your condition is obscure darkness,

41. Men who travelled have passed away while ahead of us,
Lies a long journey with no return,

42. When afflictions amassed, I had no way,
To avail you and I was stripped of you,

43. I recoiled when recoiling from your belongings,
And I was banned from the gate of meeting and deprived,

44. Your supplication was a shelter so when,
Hostility pelted me its arrows swerved,

45. Your uplifted prayer was always rectifying,
Whatsoever they ruined or invalidated,

46. Now after losing you I have a side,
Disgraced and victory over the enemy marred,

47. None loyal remains while he is Muhammad,
Who distanced the furthest with utmost effort,

48. You have an inhabited paradise so congratulate yourself,
On entering it while hellfire awaits others,

49. And when you reach the bliss, simple it becomes,
After it that greatest ordeal,

50. May God bless your tomb and so gather on it,
As He wills the blessings,

51. The breeze flows on it every evening,
And the howling star-filled sky accustoms it,

52. So rain in it falls weeping,
And lightning from it smiles laughing,

53. Its sides have become docile as if it were,
A carpet spread over the plain marked,

54. And when the steed takes us to its place,
One of us addresses while the rest greet,

55. It is sad that we speak to the soil,
One who does not respond nor speak to us.
