1. O friend, avoid people and stay home
Do not make enemies or invade their abode

2. Do not socialize, lest you face distress
And attain nothing but sin and darkness

3. You hear only gossip and slander
Every word vulgar and offensive

4. Keeping away, my lad, is a gain
Abandoning them is paradise, being with them is hellfire

5. They care for nothing but rumors
And tales of horrors and terrors

6. That sadden the heart and shame the mind
All who meet them share stories

7. Seclusion today is an obligation
Except sitting with a scholar

8. Attend lessons, but beware
Of evils and those who misguide

9. Likewise join congregations
Where divine fragrance is found

10. Attained by the pious and virtuous
With manners outward and inward

11. Know, may God guide you, four traits
That embody evil, so listen:

12. Said Al-Haddad, pay heed,
Leave them, you who seek wisdom

13. First: ignorance, reject it
Do not sit with its slaves

14. The devil's confidant, his disciple
Loser of this life and the next

15. Second: weak faith
For it is the devils' goal

16. Surrender of unbelievers and miscreants
It breeds slips and harm

17. Third: prolonged hope, forgetting
Death that makes all drink

18. Distracted by the fleeting world
Neglecting piety, way of the righteous

19. Until death suddenly comes
While heedless, neglecting duties, transgressing bans

20. Cruel, forgetful, unaware, complacent
Even admonished, he makes excuses

21. Excuses that invite blame
Not saving him on Judgement Day

22. Oh what sorrow and regret!
Endless, immeasurable

23. Fourth: consuming dubious money
Ill-gotten wealth - consider one who does:

24. How can his deeds be made wholesome?
How can his heart gain wisdom and mysteries?

25. Know, my brother, times have betrayed
Virtue, its people and allies

26. The prudent became lonely and confused
While the heedless roamed as they pleased

27. So flee to the Master, repent, desist
Do not follow the heedless and hasty

28. To Him refer all matters
Thankful and patient of fate and destiny

29. Remember your God at all times
Every breath and state

30. If you wish, you will attain miracles
Make your life entirely remembrance

31. Remembrance illuminates every heart
Remembrance strengthens heart and soul

32. Remembrance is way of every wise one
Remembrance - how many virtues told of it!

33. Remembrance plants you in gardens
Remembrance strengthens heart and soul

34. Remembrance brings you safety
Remembrance fulfills every goal

35. God remembers the rememberer
And forgets he who forgets the Divine

36. He failed in religion and life
Will regret when his time ends

37. Beware the world, God's enemy
Distracting youth from Lord and fate

38. Engrossing him from religion and piety
From the path of righteous and virtuous

39. Do not incline to it whatsoever
Nor promise it falsely and impossibly

40. Then grant it immediately
Do not be, my lad, of its chosen

41. Walk the path of the pious masters
The worshipping, pious, generous

42. The fearful, humbled, purest souls
People of sincerity and light

43. Speaking of them brings mercy
Every ambition for good revived

44. Many harshness and injustice dispelled
Clouds of adversity scatter

45. May my Lord, through them, relieve my grief
Let me see no distress or harm

46. Perhaps a fragrance will blow from the unseen
Removing our flaws and doubts

47. I hope in God, the oft-forgiving
My assumption of my Lord is good and plenty

48. Though I am disobedient and inadequate
I never despair of the generous forgiver

49. O Lord, O gracious and generous
Conclude with sincere repentance and faith

50. Forgiveness, mercy and approval
To enter Paradise and not see Hell

51. Then blessings everlasting
As long as stars twinkle and doves coo

52. Upon the guiding Prophet
His family, companions - the purest souls
