But when I wanted intimacy, there was only aloofness

13. With that love, there was no escape for me
No hope left, in that intimacy

14. I am like a feather in the air of youth
In the hands of time that gives no respite

15. I am like a ship in the sea of passion
Engulfed by surging, raging waves

16. I am like a lost wanderer in a gloomy desert
Luxuriantly growing shrubs make me lose my way

17. So I am neither guided nor do I see stars
No lightning flashes to show the way

18. Gently, slowly, O critic blaming me
And making me drink cups of bitter blame

19. I did not listen to advice nor obey commands
What lover obeys or listens to advice?

20. O Love, if only this speech could help!
O blessed advice, if only it could avail!

21. God has decreed that in love no one has foresight
An irresistible decree that cannot be repealed

A resort where I spent summer and spring

26. I cannot forget the night I endured terror
And terror made me shake with fright

27. I had no other companion but the darkness and solitude
No happiness except a heart filled with dread

28. No friend but my she-camel surrounded
By wolves competing through the wasteland

29. No eyes looking except the lackluster stars
Wondering what I was doing to myself

30. When my she-camel complained of fatigue
After the whip tore at her sides to make her run faster

31. I rode her like someone whose honor is at stake
As if I had to pay the tax collector

32. Until the tents became visible and a light
Appeared from the side of the encampment

33. So I headed for the encampment which was sleeping
Penetrating through the blackness while they were asleep

34. I did not know their condition before
But their scattered belongings guided me

35. So I passed the night, God only knows
With only an ear listening and an eye feasting

36. We were kept awake by the moaning wind
And lightning flashes frightened us

37. There were no eyes except our fear and dread
No one glancing or listening except us

38. The sweetest nectar is what's hardest to attain
The most precious intimacy is that denied

39. So despite fate she was the most beautiful
I have ever seen - no, my whole life!

40. All that disturbed us was the coo of a dove
On the boughs at dawn repeating her song

My share is enough - no more bitterness for me to drink!

47. Have mercy on me - the flood has reached disaster”
No escape left through the bow of patience

48. Yet I have become fearless and stoic
Unperturbed if calamity should strike

49. I have armed myself with patience and entrusted
My fate to God, who gives and denies

50. I do not dread misfortunes and their occurrence
Even if their poison is that of black serpents

51. I have become the neighbor of the Imam, and he
Is the noblest and most unassailable of men

52. I had heard of him for ages, but when
I saw him myself, he surpassed all I heard

53. I witnessed the most wondrous splendor
Illuminating his face - a light from God

54. The barefoot crowd the doors where he resides
Neither veiled from them, nor close-fisted

55. When you walk all eyes turn towards you
When you speak all necks bend to hear

56. Through you, jurists swagger with pride
You are the crown with which they are adorned

57. My Master - I face the days and their ups and downs
So either help me or do with me as you will

58. I am but the sapling of your bounty
Watered by rain showered from your clouds

59. If it pleases you, then the merit that befits you is yours
If not, then I am wasted among mortal men
