1. O sister of the supple boughs of the wild plum,
Priding yourself in the gardens of chastity,

2. Your glances resemble the gazelles' glances
Between the cheeky and the bashful,

3. Much flirtatious with your eyes,
Veiled and guarded severely,

4. Have you kept our love or forgotten me? For I have not forgotten,
Days of youth and boughs of union were radiant,

5. Singers in a meadow of companionship,
The gardens of your beauty were my meadow, your cheek my chalice.

6. What would it cost you to wait for a longing lover
A day of yearning is but fleeting,

7. Considering your standing an hour too long,
When in your standing is not a shred of boredom,

8. And pity my burnt up heart from parting’s fire
That left naught but faint breaths remaining,

9. Temptation plays in your beautiful eyes,
Leaving this love-struck senseless,

10. Storming him effortlessly, rousing him gently,
A sun hiding amidst sand dunes,

11. The jewel of any gathering if she deigns sit,
Passionate, yet playing hard to get.

12. I have not stopped trying to steal her heart
Until she finally relented after long refusal.

13. Do you think I wouldn’t pursue you as you walk away
Or that I readily accept despair?

14. Why then do you feign aloofness - have you not seen
On days of union the face of Al-'Abbas?

15. A gaze the rivers would flow to depict
In elation or in tender companionship,

16. A gaze before which fortunes march
As if fortunes were but his loyal guards,

17. A gaze that tells of the courage of lions in their prowling
Yet also of lions without compare,

18. In the darkness of calamities he lights the way
With wisdom telling of Lu'ayy's brains,

19. And policy, perception, and judiciousness
Towering over the wise and ministers.

20. Gentle of manner in his formidable dignity,
Resolute as adversities flare,

21. And were it not for his resolve in times of unrest,
I would have called him the charming, not the severe.

22. O scion of lords who planted their glory’s gardens
To harvest from them the finest plants,

23. You have delivered Egypt her aspirations and draped her
With the expected plenitude of your grace,

24. And you have established for the sublime kingdom its pillar,
Justice, so it stands firm based,

25. And you have trodden the path of guidance as though
You carry the scale of sovereignty’s measure,

26. Live on in blessed contentment for an Egypt gratified
Until you cleanse her from the filths,

27. And settle on her the plentiful cradle and cure
What in her lingers – for you are the perfect healer,

28. So Egypt is your Egypt, a legacy from your father,
And attain from your prudent ancestors distinction.

29. By God, the day your crescent rose resplendent therein,
Enriching her, sparing her lamps,

30. The cheek of cheeks smiled, the boughs swayed gently,
And the tongues of hearts and delegations chant

31. Verses of elation from all peoples and clans,
Small wonder their hearts danced at the sight!

32. Cups of joy the toaster passes around,
For the crescent of your face on its ascent established celebrations

33. In their hearts - what wedding can compare?
Why shouldn’t humankind rejoice the day they see it

34. When the crescent of your face is mercy for all people?
