1. We brought the horses from the rugged valleys
Grass tempts them there, the meadows allure them
١. جَلَبنا الخَيلَ مِن أَجَأٍ وَفَرعٍ
تُغَرُّ مِنَ الحَشيشِ لَها العُكومُ
2. We guided them down from the plateau for seven nights
Smooth as if its surface was made of leather
٢. حَذَوناها مِنَ الصَوّانِ سِبتاً
أَزَلَّ كَأَنَّ صَفحَتَهُ أَديمُ
3. They stayed for two nights in the valley of Mu'an
Then clouds followed the pause that came after
٣. أَقامَت لَيلَتَينِ عَلى مُعانٍ
فَأُعقِبَ بَعدَ فَترَتِها جُمومُ
4. We rejoiced, the steeds were branded
Breathed out poison through their nostrils
٤. فَرُحنا وَالجِيادُ مُسَوَّماتٌ
تَنَفَّسُ في مَناخِرِها السَمومُ
5. No, by my refuge they will come for her
Though around are Arabs and Romans
٥. فَلا وَأَبي مَآبُ لَنَأتِيَنها
وَإِن كانَت بِها عَرَبٌ وَرومُ
6. We loaded their gear, and they came
Glowering, their dust to them a cloak
٦. فَعَبَّأنا أعِنَّتَها فَجاءَت
عَوابِسَ وَالغُبارُ لَها بَريمُ
7. With smooth flanks, as if whiteness lies in them
When their lanterns, the stars, shine forth
٧. بِذي لَجَبٍ كَأَنَّ البَيضَ فيهِ
إِذا بَرَزَت قَوانِسُها النُجومُ
8. Satisfied with life, they roam freely
Their tongues marry or spurn as they wish
٨. فَراضِيَةُ المَعيشَةِ طَلَّقَتها
أَسِنَّتُها فَتَنكِحُ أَو تَئيمُ
