This raging sea foams up

هو ذا البحر مزبدا يتعالى

1. This raging sea foams up
In the wake of its successive waves

١. هُوَ ذا البَحر مزبداً يَتعالى
إِثر بَعض أَمواجه تَتَوالى

2. It beats the rock arrogantly and violently
Then recoils to the shores defeated

٢. تَلطم الصَخر كَبرياءً وَعنفاً
ثُم تَرتَد للخضم خذالى

3. With a clamor as if it were screaming shepherds
And rumbling earthquakes

٣. بِضَجيج كَأَنَّهُ زَجل الرَع
دِ وَرَجف تَخاله زلزلا

4. It has not given up its struggle over time
But the gentleness of dawn disliked it and the struggle

٤. ما وَنَت عَن جهادها الدَهر لَكن
لطف الصُبح كرّها وَالنِضالا

5. And it resumes the struggle with determination
Every day when daylight comes

٥. وَهِيَ تَستَأنف الجِهادَ بَعَزمٍ
كُلَّ يَومٍ إِذا النَهار تَعالى

6. By those shores a piece of land
God has destined its independence

٦. عِندَ ذاكَ الخَضمّ بقعة أَرض
قدَّرَ اللَهُ مَنحَها اِستقلالا

7. It is the border of Syria in the north
And in the south it takes no territory

٧. هِيَ حَدّ السوريتين شَمالاً
وَجُنوباً وَما تَنوء مَجالا

8. You will not find two Syrias but
They say this out of mischief and misguidance

٨. لَستَ تَلقى سوريتين وَلَكن
قيل هَذا تَفنناً وَضَلالا

9. They seek division in the one body
Those devils have failed so they lost

٩. يَبتَغون التَفريق في الجَسد الوا
حد خابَت تِلكَ الشَياطين فَالا

10. Leave me and remember those who liberated the slaves
And tightened reason's reins

١٠. خَل عَني واذكر من اعتقوا العَب
دَ وَشَدّوا مِن الطَليق العقالا

11. By those shores a piece of land
God protected its plains and mountains

١١. عِندَ ذاكَ الخَصمّ بقعة أَرض
حَرس اللَه سَهلَها وَالجِبالا

12. You will not see a human in its glory
As it houses partridges and quail

١٢. لا تَرى في فَنائِها آدمياً
وَهِيَ آوت صَوادِحاً وَصلالا

13. Our sun shines under its sun
Our moon gleams under its moon

١٣. شَمسنا دونَ شَمسِها تَتَجلى
بَدرَنا دونَ بَدرها يَتلالا

14. And the stillness of nighttime undoes
The heart's shackles and inspires hopes

١٤. وَسُكون الدُجى يَفك عَن القَل
بِ قيوداً وَيَبعث الآمالا

15. The morning breeze brings to life
From the flowers slopes

١٥. وَيَهب النَسيم في السحر الداكن
يحيي مِن الزهور تِلالا

16. Adorned by dewy coronets
It glows beautifully and overflows with beauty

١٦. زانَها مِن لآلي الطل تيجان
زَهَت رَونَقاً وَفاضَت جَمالا

17. So when you pass that land traveling
Dew wears its anklets like anklets

١٧. فَإِذا اِجتازَ تلكُم الأَرض غادٍ
يَلبس الطلَّ ساقَه خلخالا

18. And you see the birds flying lightly
And heavily to the right and left

١٨. وَتَرى الطَير نافِرات خفافاً
وَثِقالاً وَيمنةً وَشَمالا

19. And morning gleams color after color
Each time the sun draws nearer changing

١٩. وَيَلوح الصَباح لَوناً فلَونا
كُلَما الشَمس قاربته اِستحالا

20. And so does the submissive, humble sea
Draping itself in shawls of every color

٢٠. وَكَذا البَحر خاشع مُستكين
وَهُوَ يُكسى مِن كُل لَون شالا

21. What sights to possess one's senses
And inspire imagination in its beholders

٢١. يا لَها مِن مَظاهر تملك الحس
سَ وَتوحي لِناظِريها الخَيالا

22. O you who walk with glory, go slowly
And lower your gaze there with reverence

٢٢. أَيُّها السائر المَجدّ رويداً
وَاخفض الطَرف عِندَها اِجلالا

23. That is the refuge of freedom they took
From us long ago and today it is hard to attain

٢٣. تِلكَ مَأوى حرية سَلبت مِن
نا قَديماً وَاليَوم عَزت مَنالا

24. Oh temptation of nations, oh landmarks
Of the universe, you have split our generations

٢٤. إيه يا فَتنة الشُعوب وَيا أن
شودة الكَون شَقتنا أَجيالا

25. You have an angelic, handsome face
Whose light inspires hearts with reverence

٢٥. لَكَ وَجه مَلائِكي وَسيم
نوره يَفعم القُلوب جَلالا

26. And a hellish, stubborn temper
That cracks oppression and melts chains

٢٦. وَمَزاج جَهنَمي عَتي
يَصدع الجور يَصهر الأَغلالا

27. May God protect you, how you were ransomed
And how much fortitude you have shown, O men!

٢٧. صانَك اللَهُ كَم فداك وَفي
أَو تحصين كَم أَبدت رِجالا

28. I ask forgiveness for being remiss, they have not perished
When their deeds immortalized them after death

٢٨. أَنا اِستغفر الوَفا لَم يَبيدوا
يَوم خلدت بَعدَهُم أَعمالا

29. In your Maysalun soil lies buried
One who was an example to defenders against you

٢٩. لَكَ في ترب مَيسَلون دَفين
كان للذائِدين عَنكِ مثالا

30. He died in the bloom of youth a martyr
That's how the free man dies, fully spent

٣٠. ماتَ في ميعة الشَباب شَهيداً
وَكَذا الحر لا يَموت اِكتِهالا

31. His blood flowed in the path of homelands
The Most High, so they will know who has risen!

٣١. في سَبيل الأَوطان سالَت دماه
ذي المَعالي فَليَعلُون مَن تَعالى

32. Peace be upon him the day
A weary homeland called him to charge and fight

٣٢. فَسَلام عَلَيهِ يَوم دَعاه
وَطنٌ مُرهق فَصال وَجالا

33. Peace be upon him the day his blood was shed
Drenching the mountains

٣٣. وَسَلام عَلَيهِ يَوم أُريق الد
دَم مِنه وَضَمخ الأَجبالا

34. His soul overlooked Damascus
Visiting its meadows and covering them in shade

٣٤. هَذِهِ روحهُ أَطلت عَلى الشا
مِ تَزور الرُبى وَتَغشى الظلالا

35. And rousing its men to sacrifice themselves
Never humiliated by occupation

٣٥. وَتَحض الرِجال فيها عَلى تضحية
النَفس ما أهينوا اِحتلالا

36. When our hearts were burning
And the enemy expanded the lands with endurance

٣٦. يَوم كانَت قُلوبنا تَتَلظى
وَالعِدى توسع البِلاد اِحتِمالا

37. With filth when they shamelessly came
Their coming was ruinous to them

٣٧. بِرجيم لَمّا أَتاهُم وَقاح
كانَ إِتيانُهُ عَلَيهِ وَبالا

38. He did not spend but one night in which
He saw death around him in every form

٣٨. لَم يَبت غَير لَيلة كانَ فيها
يُبصر المَوت حَولَهُ أَشكالا

39. As if anxieties pulled him back and forth in fear
So he remained sleepless

٣٩. وَكَأَني بِهِ تجاذبه الأَو
هام رُعباً فَيَستوي اجفالا

40. Restless, watching for the dawn. When
It broke, he marched on saying:

٤٠. قلق يَرقب الصَباح فَلَما إن
تجلّى شَد الرِحال وَقالا

41. "Flee, flee! In Damascus I faced
A terrible fate and brave youths."

٤١. الفرار الفرار القيت في الشا
مِ نكالاً وَفتية أَبطالا

42. Had he stayed longer in Beirut
The outcome would have been worse

٤٢. وَلَو أن المَقام طالَ بِبَيرو
تَ لَكانَ المَصير أَسوأ حالا

43. Such is the character of honorable Arabs
Their resolve is strong and their deeds are pure

٤٣. هَذِهِ شيمة الكِرام بَني الشا
مِ سمت همة وَطابَت فعالا

44. Arab, your ancestors are Umayyad
Time does not erase those virtues

٤٤. عَربي إِباؤكمُ أُمويّ
لا أَباد الزَمان تِلكَ الخلالا

45. Every wound that befell you settled
In our core that refuses to heal

٤٥. كُل جُرح أَصابَكُم حلَ مِنا
في صَميم يأبى اِندمالا

46. God protect our glory for what we have spent
Of soul and wealth for the homelands

٤٦. يحرس اللَهُ مَجدَنا ما بَذَلنا
في سَبيل الأَوطان نَفساً وَمالا
