1. Fear and intimacy are not compatible
And love and tears are not separable

2. So restrain the claims, for they lead to ruin
And if insisted upon, they end in misery

3. And turn back from misguided paths
For the roads do not always give guidance

4. Do not say I am frightened or timid
For that is an absurd saying

5. And do not accompany the ignoramuses early in the morning
You who are intelligent and sharp

6. And remain in your incapability and be content with it
For the ground remains low however high the horizon

7. So the servant is contemptible in the presence of nobility
And the star disappears at the rising of dawn

8. Your self called you insistently to passions
And nature made it happy, along with delusion and foolishness

9. And you spent the night in self desires, busy
Wasting your time in play and distraction

10. And religion to you is just words you utter
Without any deed attached to what you have said

11. Confusion, entanglement and vacillation
And heedlessness and your claims are all nonsense

12. You have described a group with borrowed words
Yet the lovers have a state not emulated

13. So strengthen the reins of resolve to catch up with them
For resolve is the best thing you can express

14. And do not procrastinate with “later”, for it is destructive
None were pleased with it except ignorance and torn clothes

15. You are not behaving confidently
While you are acting like those who are confident

16. O you whose heart sleeps in meaning while awake
If the heart sleeps, the eyelids do not awaken

17. Do not open a problem except with seriousness
For locks do not remain on keys that are random

18. And how many have competed for a period
But it only gladdened the competitor for a little while

19. Venture your soul in the sea of piety
Indeed, in it is life and drowning

20. And you claimed the self is pure
How so, while you are tasting sins?

21. Where is the proof of what you claim?
And proofs distinguish truth and falseness

22. For in abandonment, there is no hunger or thirst
And in desires, there is no restlessness or sleeplessness

23. None accomplished determination except the wise and perceptive
Driven by the sweetness of love and compassion

24. He feared the night, so he spent the night watchful
Of a sea of death engulfing souls

25. The pillow of his eyelids busy in thought and contemplation
Not overtaken by dawn or dusk in sleep

26. At night laden with wakefulness, eyelids stained with kohl
With tears lighting the way, with tears clasped tightly

27. Outwardly displaying humility, inwardly
Filled with love; and such is the state of the people of piety

28. A journey to God has not diverted their mounts
From the passions of selves, nor diverted them attachments

29. And the gnostics, when their knowledge is sound
To God, whether silent or speaking

30. United, their eyes never wavering
Secretly or openly to other than God, even with a glance

31. Their thoughts blossoms, their breaths fragrance
Their eyelids pouring, their hearts ablaze

32. Their tears always streaming in awe
Yet their smiles for love oozing

33. Their bodies have become accustomed to roaming the earth
While their souls pierce the unseen

34. To God there are mysteries hidden in the creation
Without which doors and locks would be redundant

35. And selves whose breaths have been purified have walked
In secret, exuding love when they inhale

36. Joseph knew his brothers after distance
Which led to their gathering after they had parted

37. So know your God and act after knowing
For that is the origin, and this the branch and foliage

38. And be patient a little, for the abode is fleeting
And all who resided have departed and moved on

39. And if some time of your youth remains
Then invest it, for life remains but shortly

40. O you with greying hair, renew the garb
Except for one prevented by his lack of capacity

41. Do not forget the assault of death you will recall
When the horror of terror wraps you, and you sweat

42. And a rest that terrifies souls suddenly befalls them
If only the separation could protect them from its suddenness

43. I seek God’s forgiveness from speech
