1. Prepare the finest hospitality for your guest
And greet him with peace and goodwill

2. Spend days and nights with him
Fasting, mindful of duty and standing vigil

3. Recite remembrances throughout his visit
From beginning to end, omit none

4. Ramadan, the month of fasting, so take advantage of its nearness
To gain the strongest pillar of Islam

5. A crown whose gems are scattered through time
The central pearl in the necklace of the year

6. A station of granting wishes and gifts
As if it resides forever here

7. So strengthen for it the bond of loyalty
Its days are the rarest of days

8. And if you gain a dark night during it
Inner light pierces that darkness

9. If its arrival could be sold and bought
Souls would be sacrificed for it

10. Men of truth are a group
Who cut its sleep walking on their feet

11. I learned its passing is soon, so I harnessed for it
Yielding to its lead, the best rein

12. And the body cannot contain comfort
Nor the eyelid taste sweet sleep

13. Good tidings to those who fulfilled its right
Ordained for it, binding and strict

14. Good tidings to those who lowered their gaze from abomination during its month
Forbidden and illicit

15. Good tidings to those who muzzled their tongues from gossip
Talking nonsense and poor conduct

16. O you fasting and standing in vigil during it, glad tidings
Of salvation in it and the home of peace

17. In your month are seasons of mercy
Decreed binding for those fasting it

18. Far apart are those standing during its night
In fear or yearning or sleep

19. Be patient a little, and gain comfort
In the abode of eternal bliss

20. Wondrous is one who found healing for his sin
Yet remains troubled with misdeeds

21. An animal nature, worse than what you see
Considered as livestock by the wise

22. One not cautioned by death though witnessing it
Will never benefit from transmitted words

23. And if the fasting month ends and you do not repent
It's unlikely to repent the rest of the year

24. And if you disobey the doctor for others
You miss the doctor and gain pain

25. Take this advice from one speaking truthfully
