1. Your ascendance is not to be disputed,
And your outstretched hand is not to withdraw.

2. In you there are virtues in word and meaning,
Rising to any task with vigor.

3. Even enviers admit to them, so why not?
You as witness and your hand as judge.

4. The rest of your noble fathers and grandfathers
Set the example for the meadows.

5. And they bequeathed to their many fine descendants
Plenty, like the breaths of fragrance from gardens.

6. This light is from those lofty hills,
This stream from those irrigated meadows.

7. News reached me of the departure of Abu al-Fadl,
That saddened me, torn between affection and grief.

8. Yet we, though wounded, do not complain,
Nor have we closed our eyes in sorrow.

9. Parting with a soul is not by choice,
Nor is losing a spirit by agreement.

10. He who loses a friend from among friends
Will not be compensated with a replacement.

11. I am indebted to him in meeting him, but
I see time delays in paying the debt.

12. Abu al-Fadl, time is unstable in gathering and dispersing, as you can see,
I accepted the separation, though it angers me,

13. Yet I am not pleased to be separated from you.
So go slowly and return swiftly,

14. Like a hawk in high flight and swooping down.
Live in happiness, elevation, and glory,

15. And may He of obedience and contentment give you fortune.
When will the claims of every obstinate one be authenticated

16. With approval from sullen, squinting eyes?
