1. I was sleepless though my companions slept
Worries in my heart and sickness throbbed.

2. Thoughts of a loved one stirred up grief in me
I slept not, while my heart was filled with fright.

3. When tears flowed after tears had ceased
New tears welled up and weeping was renewed.

4. As rain poured down between erect spear-shafts
Watering the land, the farms and herds.

5. My kidneys worn out and my skin is withered,
False friends reproach me for my tears.

6. Remembering a beloved after peace and calm
When the late night stars began to shine.

7. When my eyes were sleepless, thoughts of him
And the doves cooing in the branches stirred grief.

8. Their murmurings distressed me for my dear one
And my breast was torn by the pain of longing.

9. As though we never talked or spent
A night together before dawn came.

10. A youth never spoken ill of and always
Surrounded by friends who seek his company,

11. Having followers who know that he
Is a refuge and spring rain for guests.

12. The living's pleasure has become desolate, driven
By a north wind that withers faces.

13. Whenever a guest came to my dear one
A helpful neighbor protected him.
