1. At a refreshing spring my friend found delight,
Refreshing himself after his repast at night;

2. Thirst parched my throat as if the coal
That cooked his food flamed in my soul.

3. Thou Khalifah's son of the All-merciful! Thou draught
Tempered at the pure celestial fount!

4. Thou who quaffest morn and eve the cup
Of noble deeds, pledged by thy noble ancestors!

5. Renew the olden beneficence, which once
Poured on friends, but then was shut from foes.

6. Lo! here am I an asylum craving
From thee, a suppliant this thy bounty lauding.

7. Fools exclaim: "What! hath this slave from his lord
Obtained such favours?" Yes! my help is from the Lord,

8. The Lord, who hath inclined this haughty heart
To justice, as these troops incline athwart.
